Mr. Artz has successfully defended in excess of 3000 DUI cases. He has tried to a jury more than 300 trials. He is also an editorial consultant for “California Drunk Driving Law”, a 2 volume treatise on DUI.
He received his B.S. degree in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his Juris Doctor degree from the UCLA School of Law.
Mr. Artz has lectured on DUI topics over the last 23 years for the California Public Defenders Association, California Attorneys for Criminal Justice and other legal associations. He spoke on jury selection at the statewide public defenders’ lecture on drunk driving on June 21, 2008. He taught cross-examination of the arresting officer in San Francisco in 2009 to the statewide California DUI Lawyers Association. Mr. Artz lectured on DUI trial strategy to the Fresno DUI Association in 2009. He has taught law as an adjunct professor at Pepperdine University School of Law, relating to trial strategy and evidence. Mr. Artz has also served as a judge pro tem in Los Angeles and Malibu. He secured a 7/0 reversal from the California Supreme Court in People v. Johnson (1974) 10 Cal.3d 868, the first interpretation of Penal Code §1192.5.
Mr. Artz drafts creative motions to exclude evidence. Many judges and lawyers refer friends arrested for DUI to Mr. Artz because he is an aggressive and skilled attorney and can also work wonders regarding sentencing.
