Miguel Freitas, M.S., Ph.D., is the director of health affairs for The Dannon Company, based in White Plains, NY. Dr. Freitas serves as a liaison between Dannon and the scientific community. He also is responsible for ensuring the integrity of the Dannon product portfolio with respect to health, nutrition, and probiotics and maintaining ongoing dialogue with a network of health care professionals and key opinion leaders.Dr. Freitas also serves as a liaison between The Dannon Company and Danone Research Centre in Palaiseau, France, the international research center of Danone, Dannon’s parent company, where he worked as a project leader. In this capacity, he designed and managed research projects investigating human health and functional foods – in particular, probiotics – and communicated these findings to diverse audiences through business and health marketing channels, presentations at scientific conferences, and the publication of studies in scientific journals.Dr. Freitas earned his Ph.D. in Life Sciences (Cell Biology, Microbiology and Probiotics) from the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Paris, France), Danone Research (Nutrition Department, Palaiseau, France), and École Nationale Supérieure des Industries Agricoles et Alimentaires (Massy, France). He also earned a European Master’s Degree in Food Studies from the College of Biotechnology, Oporto (Portugal), University College Cork (Ireland), University of Reading (United Kingdom), École Nationale Supérieure des Industries Agricoles et Alimentaires (France), and the University of Lund (Sweden).Dr. Freitas currently serves as a member of the American Gastroenterology Association (AGA).
