Boasting a vibrant arts scene and world-class degree options, Virginia‘s capital has emerged as a creative hub of the Southeast. Home to preeminent institutions like Virginia Commonwealth University‘s School of the Arts and the Visual Arts Masters Fellowship (VMFA), Richmond provides MFA candidates with unparalleled access to cultural resources, mentoring support and career-accelerating connections. From studios to supply stores, museums to maker spaces, the city offers inspiration around every corner.

Developing Technical Prowess Among Master Peers

VCU’s interdisciplinary programs welcome just 15 – 20 students per specialization, allowing for significant one-on-one instruction from faculty members like prominent mixed media artist Sonya Clark. The university’s downtown location facilitates collaboration; you might find printmakers and sculptors teaming up on installation projects incorporating diverse materials and techniques.

Faculty and visiting artists facilitate hands-on learning through studio visits and critiques. Third-year painting/printmaking student Tyler explains: “Having my professor spend an hour discussing my compositions, use of color and conceptual elements proved tremendously helpful in refining my style.” Classmates also provide feedback by analyzing each other’s creative challenges and proposing potential solutions.

Gaining Real-World Experience

Coursework goes beyond the classroom at VCUarts; students exhibit through partnerships with local galleries and institutions. Ceramics major Ali recalls the thrill of displaying her tea set collection at VMFA: “Seeing museum-goers admire my pieces gave me the confidence to actively pursue commissions post-graduation.”

The VCUarts MFA also prepares students to apply for coveted spots at acclaimed residency programs nationwide. Recent metalworking graduate Jun won a fully funded year-long fellowship at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, an opportunity he calls “a dream come true.”

Funding Your Degree

While competitive, VCU’s financial assistance makes completing an MFA possible. Beyond $2,500 – $5,500 yearly fellowships awarded to incoming candidates with strong portfolios, the school provides graduate teaching and research assistantships.
