Do remember you are a visitor

Read up on the customs and laws of Mexico. Learning a few words in Spanish makes a great impression as well, specifically phrases including “por favor”, “gracias” and the all-important “bano”. Remember too that time moves a little slower in Mexico, so take a breathe, be patient and relax: you’re on vacation!

Do make sure you have a valid passport

If you travel to Mexico, you will need a passport. There is an exception on certain cruises but it is much easier to get the passport. Even your two year old toddler will need a passport. On the flight you will be given a tourist card: this card is mandatory for traveling to Mexico. Hold on to the 2nd half as you will need to show that upon departure. If you lose it, there is a replacement cost that is about 50.00 USD.

Do consider an all inclusive vacation

Imagine landing in Mexico with only a few dollars in your wallet and having the time of your life for a week. That is the idea of an all inclusive. Meals, drinks, accommodations, day care for the kiddos, nightly entertainment: all of it is included in one price that you pay upfront. This is truly a worry-free vacation. If you are searching for an ultimate luxurious getaway with great value, you can find it in an all inclusive vacation. Mexico has all inclusive resorts in almost every beach destination. All Inclusive resorts are very secure. The staff is trained to meet the requirements of the international traveler.

Do get out and explore

There is so much to do outside of your resort or hotel. In the Riviera Maya area south of Cancun, for example, you can snorkel in the crystal clear Caribbean water. Scuba dive in one of the top 10 dive destinations off Cozumel. Zip line across the sky overlooking Banderas Bay in Puerto Vallarta. Deep sea fishing is world class in Cabo. Join in the release of turtles in Ixtapa. Each destination in Mexico has something unique to do, see or explore.

Do immerse yourself in the local culture

Mexico has a rich, diverse cultural heritage. Plan ahead to visit when there is a local festival or celebration. Dia de Los Muertos is celebrated throughout the country. Oaxaca celebrates with an overnight candlelight vigil that also includes local food specialties, hand made woven items and tequila tasting. Every November, Puerto Vallarta has the Gourmet Food Festival, attracting chefs and foodies from all over the world. Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico’s independence, so if you are near Mexico City, you must visit the capital to join in the traditional festivities.

Do not let bad news ruin your great trip

Mexico is a big country. If there is an incident in one area, that does not mean the rest of the country is not safe. If something happened in New York City, would that stop you from going to Los Angeles? It is the same in Mexico. Don’t miss out on an amazing vacation to the beautiful beaches of Cancun because of an isolated incident in a small northern town.

Do not travel without insurance

If you are concerned about travel to Mexico, travel insurance is highly recommended. This insurance will cover your cost if you can not travel because of a hurricane or other unfortunate events that prevent you from traveling. The insurance generally covers medical insurance while you are in Mexico. It is an extra step to giving you peace of mind so you can relax and enjoy your vacation.

Do not over do it

Sunshine, Cervezas, snorkeling, dancing, partying to the wee hours: this is all part of the fun in Mexico, right? Don’t blame the rumbling stomach on “Montezuma’s Revenge”. It might be due to having a few too many margaritas. It is great to try out new drinks, foods, and experiences, but don’t over do it and ruin your vacation. Bring some anti-diarrheal medicine, sunscreen (which is much cheaper in the US), antacid and asprin just in case. You’ll regret your grand vacation if all you do is spend it in the bathroom!

Do not drink the water

Speaking of Montezuma, refrain from drinking water in Mexico..The water in Mexico is not the same as it is in the USA. It can wreak havoc on a sensitive stomach. Drink bottled water. Make sure the ice in your soda is made with purified water. Most of the tourist resorts, restaurants and hotels do this. They want your business and do not want to risk you getting sick. Be careful when eating fresh food that has not been cooked from street vendors. Moreover, be aware of food that has been prepared in those exciting off-the-beaten-trail locations. A salad may sound like a healthy choice, but it could upset your stomach if the lettuce is washed in regular tap water. Brush your teeth with bottled water as well. Water from the tap is not potable.

Do not assume you know what you are getting into

If a deal sounds too good to be true from a street vendor, it probably is. Be aware if that “pure silver” bracelet leaves a slight black ring on your wrist, you get what you paid for. If you are offered a “free tour”, you will most likely have to listen to a timeshare presentation. If you rent a car, get insurance, a receipt and mark every little ding on the car off on your paperwork before you leave the rental location. Cell phone use is illegal while driving, even if you are parked and behind the wheel. Never drink and drive either. The penalties are very steep. Be aware of the restrictions of bringing items back to the USA. There is a limit to how much alcohol you can bring back duty free.

Summary

Mexico is a wonderful destination. Learn about the culture, treat the people with respect and they will do the same. Be smart, be prepared and get ready for a great vacation! Buen Viajes!
