Cammi Balleck PH.D‘s recommendation to ExpertBeacon readers: Do

Do exercise

Cortisol is our stress hormone and it is balanced when we exercise, however don't over do it or you will be stressing your body into making more cortisol than it needs. Have you ever needed to blow off some steam? Not only does a walk help you calm down, it also will help you get rid of anger. Remember: anger is one letter short of danger. Being physical gives all of us many benefits from improving self-esteem to blowing off steam. In order to feel happy and sexy every day, you must be physical every day. Yes, I said every day.

Do take a multivitamin and multimineral

Make sure you are taking a whole food supplement everyday. ‘Whole foods’ mean the supplement is made from actual foods. Chemical imbalances happen when we are stressed and when our bodies are deficient in minerals and vitamins. A multivitamin in the morning and a multimineral at night is a must in this fast paced, stressed world we live in today.

Do take a probiotic

I suggest all my patients take a probiotic everyday as well. Researchers have recently discovered that good bacteria, such as ones found in probiotics, can produce neurotransmitters in the gut, yet another help in maintaining your neurotransmitter levels. It also proves true that many people with gastrointestinal disorders develop, or have one or more disorders, related to neurotransmitter imbalance, and that correcting the underlying gastrointestinal disorder is imperative to long-term recovery.

Do take extra vitamin C

This potent antioxidant has been shown to reduce the rise of cortisol and subjective response to physiological stress in human studies. Generally, a high-dose supplementation is recommended short-term as the bowels can tolerate. If you take too much or eat too much, your bowels will become loose.

Do Take a B vitamin complex

B1, B2, B6, B12, niacinamide, folic acid, biotin, and inositol all should be in a good B complex. This is important to take when you are exposed to stressful situations, or daily if you are always stressed. This is great to take in the morning for energy and really helps with moods, fatigue, depression, stress, glucose control, skin, hair, eyes, and anxiety problems. It’s also great for insomnia, hyperactivity, PMS (take extra a week before your cycle is to start), menopausal symptoms, alcohol withdrawal, and if you are on an antibiotic.

Cammi Balleck PH.D‘s professional advice to ExpertBeacon readers: Don't

Do not get overwhelmed

Happy people do what they want and say no to the rest. When you have a schedule full of things to do, you overwhelm yourself and your brain. If you are overwhelmed, your body doesn’t know where to start. Your contentment is hidden. When you schedule fewer things, you create space in your day for the natural contentment that’s always present. Simplify. Do what you need to do for yourself, your health, your loved ones, and your money situation, and stop scheduling what only adds anxiety.

Do not take antidepressants

Antidepressants only work to mask the symptoms of an otherwise serious condition, and they only mess up your body’s chemicals more. Depression is a very serious condition, however, depression is not a disease. Rather, it’s a sign that your body and your life are out of balance. This is so important to remember, because as soon as you start to view depression as an illness, you think you need to take a drug to fix it. In reality, all you need to do is return the balance to your life. Depression is caused by too much cortisol (the stress hormone) and a deficiency in vitamins, minerals, efa, and amino acids.

Do not sit inside all day

I tell everyone that I am solar powered, and its true. People have to recharge with the sun. Have you ever noticed how great it can feel to spend time outdoors on a sunny day? Well, it turns out that getting safe sun exposure, which allows your body to produce vitamin D, is great for your mood. So get outside and enjoy the sun.

Do not deal with stress the wrong way

OK, you're stressed. We are all stressed, but do you reach for a salad or a drink? People experiencing chronic stress tend to crave more fatty, salty, and sugary foods in addition to drinking more alcohol. This is the wrong way to deal with your stress, as it will only add to your problem. Instead, eat healthy foods and exercise so that your body doesn’t crave these types of things.

Do not let your blood sugar rollercoaster

If your blood sugar is on a rollercoaster, your moods will be too. Make sure you are eating 6 small meals of protein, and veggies and fruit daily. Daily stress can alter your blood sugar levels, causing mood swings, fatigue, and conditions like hyperglycemia. Too much stress has even been linked to heart attacks and diabetes. Excessive daily stress even affects where we tend to store fat.

Summary

If you find yourself exhausted, overwhelmed, up and down and about to meltdown, its time to stop being stressed and depressed and learn how to unleash your happy hormones.

You could be one of the 40 million Americans suffering from a biochemical imbalance. But you have to keep in mind that each and every emotion we experience is a result of the release of certain hormones inside of our bodies. Some hormones are responsible for making us feel good, some are responsible for making us feel bad. You must get your body working properly. You cannot be happy with a toxic, unhealthy body.
