But is open-sourcing initiatives like Stability AI‘s really "democratizing" this technology as promised? Well, it‘s complicated. Let‘s dive deeper into the background, promises, risks, and key questions surrounding the push to make generative AI more accessible.

The Democratization Debate

First, what do we mean by "democratize" AI? In simple terms, it means making these formerly closed technologies available to everyday users. Rather than being locked inside research labs and big tech companies, they are released openly on platforms like Github where anyone can freely use, share, and modify them.

Stability AI, founded in 2021, aims "to make AI accessible for everyone" with their open-source systems. Their flagship generative art tool Stable Diffusion was released fully open source in August 2022. This instantly opened up advanced image generation abilities to folks with a capable personal computer.

So in one sense, yes – open source expands access to leading AI beyond elite circles. But does wider availability alone guarantee true democratization? Well, early data indicates the reality is complicated:

  • According to Stability AI, over 775,000 users interacted with Stable Diffusion in its first 6 weeks.
  • However, another report found 87% of those using Stable Diffusion had advanced degrees – so users remained predominantly educated and likely tech-savvy. [1]

So while access has increased, barriers like computing requirements, interface complexity, and demographic bias persist. The community actively developing open systems is also still relatively small and homogenous.
