Volkswagen to Bring ChatGPT Conversations to Cars in 2024

Volkswagen‘s vision is to merge Cerence‘s state-of-the-art Chat Pro technology with their existing Intelligent Digital Assistant (IDA), elevating voice interactions from simple commands to multi-turn conversations. Drivers will simply need to say "Hello IDA" or press a designated steering wheel button to activate the ChatGPT-powered assistant and begin conversing.
"By integrating a large language model like ChatGPT with our IDA voice assistant, we‘re enabling a quantum leap in the naturalness and helpfulness of in-car interactions," said Tobias Rötsch, Volkswagen‘s Head of Artificial Intelligence. "We want drivers to feel like they have an intelligent companion along for the ride, ready to assist, inform, and even entertain when appropriate."

Under the hood, Volkswagen‘s conversational assistant will leverage the power of ChatGPT, a generative language model trained on a vast corpus of online information. "We want to be absolutely clear that ChatGPT will not have access to any sensitive vehicle data or driver information," assured Marie Neuhaus, Data Protection Officer at Volkswagen. "All conversations will be processed anonymously and deleted after each session. We‘re also building in multiple layers of security to prevent unauthorized access or misuse of the system."
Phased Rollout Starting in Europe
Volkswagen plans to introduce ChatGPT-enabled models gradually, starting with select European markets in 2024. Popular models like the Golf, Passat, and Tiguan will be among the first to feature the AI-powered assistant.
