No, there are currently no Pokémon that are both Dragon and Fairy type

As a passionate Pokémon expert and content creator always exploring the cutting edge of new releases, move sets, and type matchups, one of the most frequent questions I get from fans is:

"Are there any Dragon AND Fairy type Pokémon?"

The quick answer? No, unfortunately this seemingly powerful combination does not exist yet as of 2023.

But the reasons why showcase the delicate balancing act and calculated gameplay decisions made by the Pokémon developers…not to mention the endless possibilities still on the horizon!

See why this type combo likely hasn‘t happened yet, the closest we‘ve come to Dragon/Fairy types, and my predictions for the future – including new regional forms, mythicals and more that could finally introduce the Dragon Fairy we‘ve all been waiting for!

Why No Dragon/Fairy Combo?

Dragon is consistently ranked among the strongest offensive typings in competitive Pokémon, blessed with only two vulnerabilities and some of the most formidable attacks in Outrage, Draco Meteor and more.

Fairy is its polar defensive opposite – introduced back in Gen 6 Kalos specifically to counter the sheer power of Dragon types with complete immunity.

So why haven‘t Game Freak developers combined them into one Pokémon yet? In short, it would simply be too much power concentrated into one ‘mon!

Analyzing from a combat viability standpoint, the strengths would be off the charts:

  • Hit SEVEN types for weakness damage
  • Resist Bug, Dark, Dragon, Fighting attacks
  • Immune to Dragon offense

Even mythicals and cover legendaries don‘t sport such a dominating type chart. And with the right moveset picking attacks to cover Fairy and Dragon‘s mutual weaknesses, this theoretical Pokémon would be an absolute competitive menace!

So for game balance, it makes complete sense from a developer standpoint to withhold this typing…for now. Too bad for all us fans clamoring for the ultimate dragon!

Almost Dragon/Fairy Types

While no current Pokémon sport the Dragon/Fairy type naturally, we‘ve come tantalizingly close with examples like:

Mega Altaria – The Mega Evolution of the previously mono-Dragon Altaria gains the Fairy typing, becoming the first and so far ONLY instance of Dragon/Fairy in the games. With boosted bulk, additional move options like Moonblast and Dazzling Gleam and the incredible Cloud Nine ability, Mega Altaria wears this coveted type combination better than any we‘ve ever seen.

If only we didn‘t have to click that Mega Stone to achieve Dragon Fairy status!

Togekiss – A stalwart Fairy/Flying type since its Gen 4 evolution from Togetic, Togekiss can learn a wide array of Dragon moves like Dragon Pulse, Dragon Breath and Aura Sphere to tap into dragon energy offensively.

It just misses that STAB bonus making Dragon attacks only normal effective rather than super powered. Still, with exceptional bulk, Togekiss flirts as close as any ‘mon to actualizing the Dragon/Fairy dream.

Gardevoir – Togekiss‘ Kalos comrade Gardevoir plays a similar role – stellar natural Fairy typing with access to every tool Dragon types can wield through TMs. Dazzling Gleam, Moonblast and Shadow Ball have you covered on Fairy STABs…then drop Draco Meteor, Dragon Pulse and Power Gem to unleash dragon devastation!

While these three come oh so close, ultimately the Pokémon Company has kept the Dragon/Fairy distinction frustratingly out of reach.

But based on fan theories and my own predictions – not for long!

Future of Dragon/Fairy Types

Forecasting ahead based on two decades studying Pokémon game design, lore and releases, I foresee Multiple avenues for Game Freak to Introduce the first proper Dragon/Fairy species within the next 2-3 years:

Mythical Tie-In

Like other dual typings without representation yet (Ghost/Normal, Bug/Dragon), Dragon/Fairy feels destined for a limited distribution mythical reveal. I could envision a small dragon embodying fairy tale whimsy – maybe even a nod to Peter Pan‘s Tinker Bell?

With the precedent of past mythicals like Diancie ushering in novel type combos, a Dragon/Fairy mythical seems imminent!

Regional Dragon Variant

Another prime opportunity lies with regional forms for existing Dragon pseudos like Goodra, Kommo-o or fan fave Noivern. We‘ve seen Dragon variants like Meowth‘s Galar evolution Perrserker trade Dark for Steel…what‘s preventing a Galarian Noivern gaining added Fairy powers?

I would LOVE to see an Alolan Dragonite or Hisuian Hydreigon take up the Fairy mantle keeping with the Hawaiian and feudal Japanese themes!

Brand New Evolutionary Lines

And the final avenue I expect Game Freak to unveil their first Dragon/Fairy through is via entirely new species – maybe even a proper two-stage line rather than single stage mythical.

We already adore pseudo-legendary bait like Goomy and Jangmo-o as they evolve from cute baby forms to fearsome dragons. Imagine a Baby Pokémon with ties to magic and enchanted forests maturing into a master of both dragon and fairy elements!

I offer my services as lead designer whenever you‘re ready, Nintendo!

The Wait Continues…

So unfortunately, those eagerly anticipating the chance to catch, train and battle with a Dragon/Fairy Pokémon will have to keep waiting. Game considerations around balance and power levels make this an understandable omission…for now at least!

Yet as someone devoted to analyzing Pokémon, mastering the competitive scene and absorbing every detail about new releases, I stand confident a Dragon AND Fairy type looms somewhere on the horizon.

Perhaps Gen 9 debuting later this year will finally reward our patience with the Mythical, Regional Form or Evolutionary line we‘ve spent decades fantasizing about. And you can bet as soon as we have our first official Dragon/Fairy, I‘ll be the first to catch, train and breed it into a champion team member!
