She received her PhD from the University of Georgia in 1992. Powell teaches courses in public speaking, intercultural communication, argumentation and rhetoric. After the birth of her daughter at 28 weeks gestation in 1997 Powell began researching the impact of a premature baby on family communication and co-edited a book of stories from premature parents called Living Miracles: Stories of Hope from Parents of Premature Babies. Powell has since adopted three children from foster care, and has researched and written on adult adoptee experiences. Powell is also involved in her local community as President of the Humane Society of Northeast Iowa. |
