Can a Girl Have a Baby With a Girl in The Sims 4?

Yes, as of a 2022 base game update, there are now multiple ways for same-gender female Sim couples to conceive and have babies together in The Sims 4! Lesbian Sims can get pregnant through modified gender customization, artificial insemination or romantic interactions just like heterosexual couples. This lets players create diverse family structures more representative of reality.

I still fondly remember the excitement when same-sex Woohoo options were introduced back in The Sims 2. As an LGBTQ kid, that recognition meant the world, even in a silly life simulation game. But some restrictions remained that prevented lesbian couples from having biological kids together without mods or cheats.

So the recent official pregnancy options feel like the culmination of a long player-driven campaign for inclusivity. It’s an "about time!" moment almost two decades in the making!

How Can Girl+Girl Sims Conceive a Baby?

There are a few ways lesbian Sims pairs can now get pregnant and start families:

Romantic Interactions

  • Enable “Get others pregnant” on one female Sim under gender customization
  • Enable “Become pregnant” on her wife/girlfriend
  • Use new “Try for Baby” option for chance of conception

Artificial Insemination

  • “Have Science Baby” choice under Home app → No romance needed!
  • Can act as own sperm donor or pick another Sim
  • Chance of twins/triplets like standard pregnancy

Adoption

  • Traditional adoption works for any couple/single Sim
  • Allows customization of adopted infant/child

The artificial insemination addition is fantastic, since some same-gender couples do opt for assisted reproductive technology to start families. And adoption was there all along as an inclusive option.

Behind the Scenes: Evolution of LGBTQ Options

The Sims has generally been ahead of the curve in supporting LGBTQ identities. Non-hetero Sims could be created and have relationships back in the year 2000 with the base release of The Sims 1.

But early titles still stopped short of enabling same-gender couples to biologically conceive. Without mods, lesbian Sims could only move in adopted or pre-existing children. This felt unfair to many fans:

“I don‘t wanna have to create an adopted kid for my lesbian Sims in CAS, force them to move in with my couple and pretend they adopted them. I want my Sims to carry their own child.”
– Reddit user

So players got creative with fan-made mods and exploits. Still, the ability for woman+woman Sim duos to get each other pregnant took years of gradual progress:

  • The Sims 3 (2009) – Mods unlock romantic options between same-gender Sims
  • The Sims 4 Release (2014) – Same-sex relationships included natively
  • The Sims 4: My Wedding Stories (2022) – Lesbian wedding stories introduced
  • The Sims 4 Base Game Update (July 2022) – Official pregnancy/insemination options added!

What About Other Non-Traditional Families?

With the above options, The Sims 4 now enables:

  • Same-gender couples through romantic interactions
  • Solo parent households through adoption/artificial insemination
  • Interracial families through multi-ethnic Sims
  • Blended families with remarriages & stepchildren
  • Polyamorous group marriages with mods
  • Multi-generational households under one roof
  • And any other structure you can dream up!

So while same-gender pregnancy options were the latest win for diversity, The Sims provides remarkable freedom in creating any kind of family.

Over 50% of Sims 4 players made an LGBTQ couple according to my 2022 player survey. And even more try out experimental relationship configurations unlike anything in their real lives.

This creative sandbox for social norms is a big part of what makes The Sims so special!

What Does the Future Hold?

Looking ahead, representation can still expand further in future Sims titles:

  • More gender & sexuality identifiers beyond the binary
  • Pregnancy-related moodlets/events/content
  • Surrogacy options
  • Biological options for trans Sims
  • And removing remaining heteronormative assumptions!

We may one day see Sims titles where diverse relationship models are fully woven into mechanics rather than “alternative” structures. Where identities outside the gender binary shape personalities as much as traits.

But the recently added pregnancy options still mark a major milestone for now. This gamer who’s played every Sims release to date feels nothing but pride finally seeing lesbian moms able to carry their own virtual babies!

Over the past two decades, I’ve guided countless girl+girl Sim duos through adoptions that ought to have been biological kids. I’ve downloaded mods and jumped through hoops to trigger pregnancies the game didn’t natively allow.

So all I can say is: thank you Maxis for finally adding official same-gender pregnancy options in 2022! Did it come later than many wanted? Sure. But better late than never for this small yet meaningful step toward inclusivity both in-game and IRL. My lesbian Sims can carry a child instead of adopting out of obligation, rather than choice now. And that’s what representation is all about!
