Can Cosmog be Traded in Pokémon GO?

Yes! As of January 2023, Cosmog and its Evolutionary Line Can Now Be Traded

After years of being restricted to trading and transferring, Niantic has lifted the restrictions on Cosmog, Cosmoem, Solgaleo, and Lunala. This Mythical family of Pokémon can now be freely traded and transferred to Pokémon Home.

Background on Cosmog in Pokémon GO

Cosmog is a Psychic-type Mythical Pokémon introduced in the Alola region games Pokémon Sun & Moon. Referred to in the games as the "Child of the Stars", Cosmog has a very mysterious background and is capable of creating Ultra Wormholes to other dimensions.

In Pokémon GO, Cosmog first became available in September 2022 as a Special Research reward. Only players who completed the first set of tasks were able to catch this elusive Pokémon.

Once caught, Cosmog can be evolved into Cosmoem using 25 Candy, and then into either Solgaleo or Lunala using 100 additional Candy:

PokémonEvolution Requirement
Cosmog → Cosmoem25 Cosmog Candy
Cosmoem → Solgaleo100 Cosmog Candy, Evolve During Day Time
Cosmoem → Lunala100 Cosmog Candy, Evolve During Night Time

However, up until January 2023, this entire evolutionary line was restricted from being traded or transferred out of Pokémon GO.

Which Pokémon Still Cannot Be Traded?

While the Cosmog line can now be traded, most other Mythical Pokémon still cannot be traded as of early 2023. This includes high-demand Mythicals like Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Victini, and more.

The only exceptions are Meltan and Melmetal, which have been tradable since they were introduced into the game.

So in summary – Cosmog, Cosmoem, Solgaleo, Lunala = Tradable

Most other Mythicals = Still Non-Tradable

(With the exceptions of Meltan and Melmetal)

Benefits and Strategies For Trading Cosmog

Now that we can trade the Child of the Stars and its Evolutions, what are some of the benefits and trade strategies around these rare Pokémon?

  • Completion of Pokédex – Players who missed out on catching Cosmog from its Special Research can now trade for one to register it in their Pokédex.
  • Rare Candy Discount – Trading away spare Cosmog / Cosmoems can earn trainers valuable Rare Candies to spend on powering up other Pokémon.
  • PVP Battle Leagues – High stat Cosmog family members can have usage in Go Battle League formats like the Master League.

However, there are downsides to be aware of when trading away your Cosmog:

  • As a Mythical trade, it will cost 1,000,000 Stardust if the two trainers are not yet Best Friends status.
  • IVs (Individual Values) will reroll randomly during trading, meaning you could lose good stats.

To get the best value, I would advise trainers seek out a Best Friend to trade Cosmog / its Evolutions with. This brings the trading cost down to 40,000 Stardust.

You can use an online friendship building service or local community to efficiently build friendship levels with fellow trainers you intend to trade these rare Pokémon with.

The possibilities are out there with trading the Child of the Stars!

Parting Thoughts

The lifting of trade and transfer restrictions on the Cosmog family opens up new opportunities for Pokémon GO trainers. As a passionate gamer myself, I‘m thrilled by this change and the chance to use Solgaleo and Lunala as part of my Master League and raid teams.

I will leave you all with a final tip based on my expertise – Do NOT transfer your only Cosmog! Even if you already have its Evolutions, holding onto at least one Cosmog ensures you can get more Candy in the future.

Did you catch and evolve Cosmog during its Special Research? How do you plan to utilize trading now that restrictions are lifted? Let me know in the comments!
