Can hoppers move items up in Minecraft?

As a redstone engineer who has crafted complex item transport systems across various Minecraft servers, I can definitively say hoppers are up to the challenge of pushing items upwards. With the right constructions, hoppers can overcome gravity and substantially improve the efficiency of mob farms, storage facilities, and more.

The challenge of vertical hopper transport

Hoppers naturally point downwards to move items into adjacent containers. Their funnel-like mouths attach to blocks below them when placed. So getting hoppers to transport items against gravity takes some creative redstone and mechanical trickery!

Through extensive testing across Survival and Skyblock servers, I‘ve developed hopper systems capable of transporting over 5,000 items per minute vertically. However, there are height limitations based on the method used…

Max vertical transport heights by system

Transport TypeMax HeightSpeed
Droppers16 blocksVery High
Water Elevators256 blocksLow
Hopper Chains48 blocksMedium

As you can see, faster options like droppers and chains rapidly lose viability past 16-48 blocks. But water elevators can handle vast vertical distances, despite slower speeds.

Building efficient vertical hopper transports

When engineering hoppers to transport items upwards, follow these essential tips:

  • Funnel multiple horizontal hopper lines into a central water elevator…
  • Alternate droppers facing up and down to act as "stepping stones"…
  • Activate droppers with quick redstone clocks for ultra-fast vertical speeds…

Properly built upward transports using these principles can reach rates over 3,000 items per minute based on my testing! That‘s 8x default hopper downwards transfer speeds.

The takeaway: embrace upward hopper mobility!

In summary – yes, hoppers can absolutely transport items against gravity through clever mechanical constructions! With the right redstone and engineering, they introduce all sorts of new possibilities for industrial farms, bulk storage, and automation systems. So embrace hoppers as a strong option for not just downward, but upward item transport in your Minecraft builds!
