Can I get GTA 5 for free on PC if I have it on Xbox?

The short answer is no. If you want to play GTA 5 on PC, you‘ll need to purchase it again even if you already own it for Xbox.

I know that‘s not the answer you were hoping for! As a fellow gamer and content creator, I totally get wanting to access your games across different platforms.

So in this post, I‘ll give you a comprehensive low-down on whether and how you may be able to score GTA 5 for free or cheaper on PC.

Do I have to buy GTA 5 again for PC?

Unfortunately yes. When you buy a game, you are purchasing a license to play that game on a specific platform.

For example, when you bought GTA 5 on Xbox:

  • You purchased a Xbox console game license
  • That license applies ONLY to playing on Xbox
  • It does not give you rights to play on other platforms

This is standard for most video games, even huge AAA titles like GTA 5.

According to Rockstar Games‘ website:

"You will need to purchase separate versions of Grand Theft Auto V for each gaming platform."

So whether you choose PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, PC, or even next-gen consoles – you need to buy GTA 5 again to play it there.

GTA 5 Unit Sales by Platform

PlatformCopies Sold
PlayStation 320 million
Xbox 36018.5 million
PC10 million
PlayStation 44.5 million
Xbox One3.7 million

As you can see, lots of gamers own GTA 5 on multiple platforms – causing them to purchase the game more than once!

This has allowed the game to rack up a staggering 140 million total units sold worldwide.

Can I transfer my GTA Online progress from Xbox?

If you want to continue your GTA Online progress on PC, there is some good news.

You can link your Xbox gamertag with your Rockstar Social Club account. This allows you to transfer your GTA Online characters, progress and statistics.

However, there are a few big catches:

  • Only your GTA Online progress transfers – not GTA 5 story mode progress
  • You have to link accounts BEFORE switching platforms
  • Accounts can only transfer once

So if you‘ve already gone ahead and started GTA Online on PC, then you won‘t be able merge your Xbox progress anymore.

Additionally, note that getting GTA 5 free on PC does not come with a free transfer. You would still need to purchase the game again for PC to move your Xbox progress over.

Has GTA 5 ever been free on PC?

There have been a few limited-time promotions making GTA 5 available for free on PC:

Epic Games Store Giveaway

  • Lasted 2 weeks from May 14 to May 21, 2020
  • Epic users could claim GTA 5 free for PC
  • After event ended, discounts returned to normal pricing

Over that 2 week timeframe, Epic reported that GTA 5 had been claimed by a staggering 7.8 million gamers.

So for a short time, there was definitely a way to enjoy all of GTA 5‘s vast single player story and addicting GTA Online multiplayer mode without paying anything.

Unfortunately though, this promotion ended years ago, so you can no longer get GTA free through Epic.

Amazon Prime Gaming Bonus

Amazon also offered free GTA Online content for a while through Prime Gaming.

Prime members could redeem special bonuses like GTA$ currency, properties, vehicles, discounts and more at no extra cost.

However:

  • This was NOT the full base GTA 5 game
  • You had to log in via PC, link your Rockstar Social Club account
  • The Prime offer has since ended

So sadly, there are currently no free giveaways granting the complete GTA 5 story and online access. But you never know when Rockstar may partner up with stores or services again!

Cheaper Ways To Get GTA 5 on PC

While you may no longer score GTA 5 completely free using the methods above, here are a few legit ways to save money:

1. Buy During a Steam Sale

Steam sells GTA 5 digitally on their PC gaming marketplace. They offer big seasonal sales where prices slash dramatically.

SaleDiscount
Autumn Sale 202250% off $14.99
Summer Sale 202250% off $14.99

By grabbing it half-price during promotions like these, you can save a bunch on the normal $29.99 cost.

2. Snag a CD Key

Sites like CDKeys sell game activation keys at a discounted rate. Here‘s an example offer:

You can often enjoy 20-30% off normal pricing when buying CD keys. Just make sure to shop safely and read reviews!

3. Trade In Your Console Copy

If you bring your physical Xbox GTA 5 copy to GameStop, BestBuy or electronics stores, they may offer you cash or store credit for trading it in.

You can then put that money towards purchasing the PC edition! Every dollar saved counts.

So in summary:

  • Getting GTA 5 completely free on PC after owning the Xbox version is not possible anymore after past giveaways ended
  • But you CAN legitimately save money on the PC copy by buying on sale, using CD keys, or trading in

I know this probably isn‘t the free PC transfer answer you hoped for. But paying a bit more to enjoy GTA‘s insane world in 4K resolution at 60fps+ frame rates on PC is worth every penny!

Let me know if you have any other questions.
