Can You Get Married in Fallout 4?

No, unfortunately you cannot officially get married or have marriage ceremonies in the base Fallout 4 game. There is no marriage mechanic built into the gameplay.

However, you can still develop romantic relationships and sleep with a variety of companions. And some amazing player-made mods can even enable wedding events to roleplay marrying your favorite companion!

So let‘s dive deeper into romancing companions in Fallout 4, popular mods that bring marriage into the wasteland, and related mechanics around having children.

Developing Romances in Fallout 4

While marriage itself isn‘t possible without mods, you can absolutely romance companions in Fallout 4. There are eight companions you can start sexy relationships with, and another eight settlers or non-playable characters as well.

Here‘s an overview of how you go about romancing companions:

Building Companion Affinity

Similar to earning their trust, you need to raise a companion‘s affinity level towards you to unlock romance dialogue options.

  • Raising affinity:
    • Traveling together
    • Completing quests
    • Helping factions they like
    • Using persuasion in dialogue
    • Giving gifts they love

Once they "idolize you", romance options open up!

CaitChemsHelping others+100 dmg below 25% health
CurieSelflessness, empathyViolence, cruelty100 HP regen out of combat
DanseHelping the BrotherhoodFailing quests+20% damage to ghouls/synths

Having enough Charisma and optionally the Lady Killer/Black Widow perks also expands romance chances.

Romancing Companions

When a companion hits max affinity, they‘ll offer unique romance dialogue options. Choose flirtatious responses successfully to begin a romance!

You can actually sleep with and romance multiple companions with no jealousy mechanics. Though only one at a time can follow you as an active companion.

Of course, many players choose to roleplay monogamous relationships too and focus on their favorite partner.

Top Recommended Romances

Based on depth of stories, personalities, and interesting affinity mechanics – here are my top 3 recommended romance options:

1. Curie

I absolutely love Curie‘s unique storyline that lets you enable transferring her personality from a Miss Nanny robot into a synth body. Seeing her adapt to becoming human, with enhanced abilities to feel emotions and physical sensations, makes for a memorable romance arc!

2. Paladin Danse

Despite his stubborn loyalty to the Brotherhood of Steel, Danse has an engaging personal story around his past. And his affinity likes/dislikes encourage spending time together in the field, strengthening your bond.

3. Cait

Cait‘s growth from a drug addicted cage fighter to overcoming her painful past is great development. And her affinity dialogue is impressively natural for the wasteland! Plus she likes when you pick locks and drink – nice and easy boosts.

I‘d rank those three as my favorite romance options just based on story impact and interesting progression mechanics. I definitely keep Cait or Curie as my partner in most playthroughs!

Marrying Companions with Mods

Again, Fallout 4 has no marriage ceremonies or mechanics without the help of mods from the incredible modding community.

Here are some of the most popular mods for marrying companions:

  • Marriage Mod – the most customizable and stable marriage experience. Lets you plan entire weddings!
  • Spouse Forever – simpler marry option, focus on spousal dialogues after.
  • Cheat Terminal – powerful mod with wedding rings to roleplay marriage

I prefer Marriage Mod for the full wedding planning questlines. Being able to invite guests, choose decorations, and customize your spouse‘s dress/suit is amazing for immersion!

The ceremony itself is beautiful – you exchange vows underneath the ruins of the Old North Church. Then enjoy a reception dinner with your companion and guests!

So while base Fallout 4 sadly doesn‘t let you officially marry companions, talented mod authors have added tons of custom marriage content!

No Children or Pregnancy

Along with the lack of marriage, Fallout 4 does not technically support pregnancy or having children in vanilla gameplay.

However, with the help of mods (again) you can obtain functionality around:

  • Getting companions pregnant
  • Delivering babies
  • Custom child settlers
  • Raising children

Some recommended mods for children/pregnancy in Fallout 4:

  • Children Support – have babies with companions
  • Orphans of the Commonwealth – adopt orphan child settlers
  • Toddler Faces – improved child faces
  • Biological Mesh Replacer – child body meshes

But generally getting all child related mods to work properly together is tricky based on load orders and compatibility issues in my experience. It can be super fulfilling having little families across my settlements! Yet also buggy at times.

Still, props again to the modders for making parenting possible in Fallout 4. Even if the base game focused instead on adult relationships through romancing companions vs. children/marriage features.

Final Thoughts on Fallout 4 Marriages & Romances

Even though tying the knot through an in-game marriage ceremony isn‘t vanilla, I love roleplaying marrying my favorite companion with installed mods! Getting to plan out everything from guest seating charts to flower decor is amazing for immersion.

And the sophisticated affinity system for developing romances based on companion personalities remains one of Bethesda‘s best innovations for relationships. I enjoy that companions react to how you treat factions they like or dislike while adventuring. Making the bond feel more natural.

While post-release DLC never brought official support for marrying companions or having children, dedicated Fallout 4 modders have continued adding fantastic spouse & child content years later. We can look forward to what this passionate community comes up with next!

So in the end – no you can‘t officially marry, get pregnant or have kids in the base Fallout 4. But you should absolutely install mods to experience those rich stories for yourself!

Now time for me to return to planning out my character‘s dream wedding to Piper…right after dealing with those pesky super mutants down the road!
