Can I play FIFA 23 on PS4 with PS5 players?

No. As confirmed by EA Sports, there is no cross-play enabled between the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of FIFA 23. PS4 and PS5 players cannot matchmake to play against or with each other in any online modes.

Why PS4 and PS5 Cross-Play Isn‘t Possible

According to EA‘s Pitch Notes for FIFA 23, cross-play between PS4 and PS5 is not possible due to hardware limitations and maintaining competitive balance:

"PS5 provides seamless gameplay experiences that would not align technologically with the current generation of console hardware. In order to preserve the next level innovation that the PS5 enables, we have to limit crossplay to PS5 vs. PS5 until later in the lifecycle when more players have migrated to next gen."

The more powerful PS5 hardware allows instantaneous stadium loading, haptic feedback, responsiveness improvements, and other next-gen features. Syncing up these elements with the PS4 platform would likely cause performance issues. And PS5 players would have gameplay advantages with their advanced controllers and reduced input delay.

Current Player Base per Platform

According to EA, as of October 2022 approximately:

  • 65% of the FIFA 23 player base is on past generation (PS4, Xbox One)
  • 35% on next-gen (PS5, Xbox Series X/S)

So the majority of fans are still on old gen consoles. Forcing them to upgrade to new expensive hardware for cross-play would be unfair.
