Can I play my Diablo 2 PC character on Switch?

Thanks to a feature called "cross progression" introduced in Diablo 2 Resurrected, you can now continue playing your online Diablo 2 characters across both PC and Nintendo Switch. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

How Cross Progression Works

Cross progression in Diablo 2 Resurrected syncs your gameplay progress and characters by linking your Battle.net account across platforms. Here‘s a quick overview:

  • Link your Battle.net account to other platforms like Nintendo Switch
  • Your online characters, progression (levels, gear), and purchased items carry over across linked platforms
  • Resume playing seamlessly wherever you left off on another platform

So once you‘ve linked your accounts, your Diablo 2 online characters and save data will essentially sync between PC and Switch. You pick up right where you left off.

Cross Progression Limitations

While cross progression is excellent for continuing solo play across platforms, there are some limitations:

  • No crossplay – can‘t play multiplayer together across platforms
  • Offline single player characters don‘t transfer
  • Shared stash doesn‘t transfer between platforms

Crossplay would allow multiplayer across platforms. But currently this is not supported in Resurrected. So your cross progression is limited to solo play characters.

Playing Diablo 2 Switch vs PC

Diablo 2 Resurrected recreates the classic Diablo 2 experience remarkably well across all platforms. But the PC and Switch versions each have their own pros and cons:

Nintendo SwitchPC
Graphics and Performance720p 30fps when docked, 480p 30fps handheldUp to 4K 60fps+ with high end hardware
ControlsTouch screen handheld, Joy-Cons when dockedMouse & keyboard precision
Online RequirementAlways onlineOnline optional

Of course PC offers higher end performance potential. But the Switch version holds up well and offers the benefit of on-the-go handheld play.

And thanks to cross progression, you now have the best of both worlds – gaming on PC, then continuing your adventures on your Switch when traveling or away from your desktop.

Linking Your Battle.net & Nintendo Accounts

To get cross progression working between your Diablo 2 PC and Switch versions, you need to link your Battle.net and Nintendo accounts.

Here is the full process:

Step 1

Login to your Battle.net account online or in the desktop app. Navigate to "Connections" then "Linked Accounts".

Step 2

Select Nintendo Switch and click continue. Sign in with your Nintendo account credentials.

Step 3

Once connected, your Nintendo account will now appear under Linked Platforms on your Battle.net connections page. You‘ve now successfully linked them!

Step 4

Install and load up Diablo 2 Resurrected on your Switch. When you reach the title screen, it will automatically sync your online character data from Battle.net servers.

You can now select your existing online PC characters directly on your Switch! Cross progression complete.

Expert Analysis and Projections

Gaming industry analysts have praised Diablo 2 Resurrected‘s cross progression implementation and expect the feature to become an expectation for modern games moving forward.

As gaming hardware expert John Carmack stated on Twitter:

"Cross-progression support should be mandatory for multiplayer titles moving forward across all platforms. No more siloed islands of progression data."

According to a VentureBeat 2021 gaming industry report, an estimated 72% of game consumers now expect and request cross platform character transfers of some kind when purchasing multiplayer focused games.

While full crossplay allows actual multiplayer gameplay across platforms, cross progression delivers continuity by ensuring your time investment into a title isn‘t stranded based on what system you play on.

And with gaming now spread across more systems than ever including mobile, crosses device progression will continue gaining traction.

The Future of Cross Progression

While already excellent in Resurrected, Diablo cross progression could expand in the future. Potential upcoming improvements include:

  • Seamless multiplayer connections – Allow joining games with crossplay friends across platforms.
  • Deeper integration – Share achievements, friend lists, guilds, etc.
  • Added platforms – Expand to mobile with Diablo Immortal integration.

As Microsoft finalizes its acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, hopes are high that additional resources could accelerate and enhance cross ecosystem gaming functionality.

But even in its current implementation, Diablo 2 Resurrected cross progression offers excellent flexibility to play between your platforms of choice.

Continue Your Adventure Anywhere

I hope this guide gives you a better understanding of utilizing cross progression to move your Diablo 2 online characters between PC and Nintendo Switch.

Taking your demon hunting on the go, then returning back to your high end desktop gaming is now seamless thanks to cloud sync and account connections. Diablo has never been more portable and flexible.

Cross platform character progression is quickly emerging as an essential feature, and Diablo 2 Resurrected sets the new standard. Wherever you game, Sanctuary awaits!
