Yes! You Can Play Minecraft Multiplayer Between Nintendo Switches

As an avid Minecraft fan who owns multiple Switch consoles, I can definitively say yes, you absolutely can play Minecraft together between two or more Nintendo Switch systems! Both in terms of local wireless multiplayer, and online multiplayer via Nintendo Switch Online.

In my household we have three Switches connected to the same Nintendo account, which lets all four of us gather around the TV and dive into the same Minecraft world using local play. Or we go to our separate rooms and play online on massive servers with thousands of other Minecraft fanatics on Switch and other platforms.

Let me tell you, after collectively sinking over 800 hours into Minecraft on the Switch, multiplayer is every bit as fun and addictive as on PC or other consoles! So let me share the knowledge on exactly how playing together works.

Connecting Switch Consoles for Local Wireless Minecraft Multiplayer

Playing multiplayer locally is a seamless experience between two or more Switch consoles thanks to the local wireless connectivity.

Here‘s how to set it up:

  • First, make sure both Switch consoles are updated to the latest system and game software versions. This prevents potential connectivity issues (Nintendo, 2023).

  • Next, on each Switch, launch Minecraft from the home screen and select "Create New World" to host a world.

  • On the joining Switch, go to "Join Local Game" and it should show the hosted world from the other console. Select it to connect!

Once connected, the two Switches act as client and host – the host‘s world is the one you play in together. The local wireless range is pretty large too, covering most homes even with rooms or floors between the consoles.

We like playing four player Mario Kart and Overcooked 2 this way with great performance. For Minecraft, this local play is perfect for cooperative survival, battling mob hordes together, or team PvP games!

Troubleshooting Local Wireless Connection Issues

If your Switches can‘t see each other‘s worlds, try these steps:

  • Make sure both consoles have wireless connectivity enabled by entering airplane mode then re-enabling Wi-Fi.

  • Try restarting both systems and relaunching Minecraft. This refreshes network connections.

  • Check your home Wi-Fi router firmware and settings don‘t have connectivity bugs with Switch consoles (Nintendo Forums, 2022)..

Our Favorite Local Wireless Minecraft Games

We have the most fun in these multiplayer minigames and modes using local wireless between Switches:

  • Battle – Fight against each other with swords, bows and more in an arena. We love team battles!

  • Spleef – Knock out blocks underneath opponents til they fall. Tense matches between floors of our house.

  • Build Battles – Cooperatively build something based on a theme before time runs out! Tests our creativity.

I‘d estimate we‘ve played over 100 hours of just these three modes alone on local play!

Online Multiplayer Between Nintendo Switches

Playing Minecraft online multiplayer is also fully supported between Switch consoles. But this does require several things:

  • All players need to subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online for internet connectivity. It costs $20 annually (Nintendo, 2023).

  • To access massive multiplayer servers, you need to link your Nintendo account to an Xbox Live account (Microsoft, 2023)

  • Having decent home internet speeds helps avoid lag or disconnects. We upgraded our Wi-Fi router and internet plan for better online gaming.

The benefits of the Switch Online membership for Minecraft include:

  • Joining thousands of multiplayer servers with different themes and custom mods
  • Playing with friends on other consoles through cross-platform connectivity
  • Uploading saved worlds online for backup or to import on other devices
  • Chat with typed or voice messages (requires mobile app)

We‘ve made lots of Microsoft accounts for family members which lets all our Switches play together on various online servers like Hypixel, Cubecraft and Mineplex. It can handle up to 100 players on a server with minimal performance issues in my experience.

The crossplay also means we can join up with buddies on Xbox One or mobile sometimes, though the massive player counts are only on Switch.

Our Favorite Online Servers and Modes

While we love local wireless on our home network, playing on online servers with countless other players is a whole different level of fun and chaos!

Some of the servers and modes we play for hours at a time include:

  • Hypixel – Iconic server with over 100 multiplayer minigames. Prop Hunt is a house favorite! Also love Duels, SkyWars, Bed Wars.
  • Lifeboat – Lots of competitive battle royales and Survival Games with intense PvP fights.
  • Purple Prison – Fun prison escape maps and modes with cooperate or betray other inmates!
  • Cubecraft – Great minigames, specially EggWars which gets intense when whole teams battle!

We tally up scores and leaderboards for tournament play within our family across the various online servers to see who will emerge as the ultimate Minecraft champion in our household!

Local Split-Screen Multiplayer on One Nintendo Switch

Did you know it‘s entirely possible to play local multiplayer on just one Switch console too?

It supports a split-screen mode for 2-4 players sharing one screen:

  • Up to 4 players can join one local world using additional Joy-Con pairs or Pro Controllers paired to that Switch
  • The screen dynamically splits based on number of players – 2 player is vertical split, 4 players is 4-way split

For 2 or 3 players, this can work fine. But for 4 players, the playable area gets rather small so we bought some proper controllers.

Better Controllers for Split-Screen Multiplayer

The tiny Joy-Con are not ideal for prolonged Minecrafting in my view. We picked up the Hori Split Pad Pro which adds full grips and proper controls for handheld mode (Amazon, 2023):

Hori Split Pad Pro

Much more comfortable, especially for big gaming sessions on the couch!

For family game nights on the TV, the Switch Pro Controllers are fantastic too with proper analog sticks, buttons, grips. Having four of them synced up provides a solid experience similar to Xbox or Playstation. Well worth the $60 investment each in my opinion.

Fun Local Co-Op Minigames

While full servers provide endless entertainment online, there‘s something special about sitting on the couch and playing split-screen right next to your friends or siblings!

We like playing these cooperative and competitive minigames on split-screen:

  • Battle – Team battles with all of us on the couch gets loud and rowdy! Testing out crazy weapon creations on each other never gets old.

  • Spleef – Breaking out blocks underneath people is a blast in split-screen multiplayer. My brother hates when I target him specifically here!

  • Adventure Maps – Custom quest, parkour, puzzle and exploration maps on split-screen is co-op gaming at its finest. Uncovering secrets together while sitting next to each other is awesome.

So while online multiplayer might have huge player counts – for just instant, simple fun few things beat playing the same world via split-screen.

Minecraft and Nintendo Switch Sales Reflect Multiplayer Popularity

Looking at sales and usage data shows the enduring popularity of multiplayer Minecraft – both in general and specifically on Nintendo‘s handheld/console hybrid:

  • As of 2022, over 200 million copies of Minecraft have been sold globally across all platforms ([Microsoft, 2022](https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2022/10/19/more-ways-to-play-minecraft– than-ever-before-as-game-passes-milestone-of-over-200-million-lifetime-sales/)). Multiplayer servers driving much of this sustained engagement.
  • The Nintendo Switch version of Minecraft was released in 2017. Since then Switch sales have surged to over 122 million consoles sold as of 2022, now the 5th highest selling console ever (Wikipedia, 2023)
  • On the Switch itself, Minecraft was reported as having an active player base over 20 million strong at the end of 2021 – and likely much higher in 2024 (BusinessWire, 2021) . Other big multiplayer titles driving Switch hardware sales include Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, and Pokemon Scarlet/Violet.

You can see why Nintendo‘s leadership greenlit Switch compatibility with Xbox Live and cross-platform multiplayer. It expands the Minecraft player pool drastically beyond just the native Switch installed base.

And all signs point to continued revenue growth from multiplayer games like Minecraft on Nintendo consoles into the coming years with over 100 million more potential customers. Software and services revenue on the Switch grew by a massive 49% in 2022 showing the trajectory going upwards (Nintendo Investor Report, 2022). Playing Minecraft surely contributes a healthy chunk!

Local Wireless vs Online Multiplayer Feature Comparison

To summarize and help decide which multiplayer method works for your needs, here‘s a quick comparison table between the two approaches:

FeatureLocal WirelessOnline Multiplayer
Max Number of Players8 across multiple Switches100s per server
Internet Required?NoYes, plus subscriptions
Crossplay Support?NoYes, play with tons of other platforms
Child SafetyFull control at homeRisk of strangers online
Content AvailableVanilla Minecraft featuresCustom mods and minigames on servers
Lag and Bugs?Very minimalCan happen with large servers
Location ConvenienceSwitches must be in same house or areaPlay from anywhere with internet

So in deciding how to play together, think about factors like:

  • How many people need to play simultaneously? Local supports 8 players max
  • What kind of game content do you want access to? Lots of custom content on servers
  • Prioritizing safety of younger gamers? Local play gives more control
  • Want ability for remote playing together? Online enables long distance multiplayer

Both local wireless and online multiplayer offer excellent collaborative and competitive Minecraft experiences – your needs dictate what works!

In Closing – Nintendo Switch + Minecraft Multiplayer Delivers Countless Hours of Fun

I hope this guide clearly illustrates the great flexibility Nintendo Switch consoles provide for playing Minecraft multiplayer both locally and online.

With over 800 collective hours in multiplayer Minecraft worlds between family and friends, I can‘t understate just how much joy, laughter, and bonding it has enabled for us on the Nintendo platform specifically.

So grab some extra controllers, team up in the living room or connect online to join millions of Minecraft fans who understand why this sandbox creativity tool has become a forever game. Just make sure to set aside plenty of hours – before you know it, the sun will be rising outside your window again!

Now if you‘ll excuse me, my siblings are calling me to settle the score in a rematch Battle minigame tournament that I apparently "cheated" in last time. My diamond armor and carefully crafted potions say otherwise!

Happy crafting!
