No, You Cannot Gift Packs in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

As a passionate Call of Duty player and content creator myself, one of the first questions I explored after MW2‘s launch was whether gifting packs and the battle pass would be possible, as it has been in previous COD titles.

Unfortunately, gifting bundles, blueprints, operators, and even the MW2 battle pass is not an available option between player accounts at launch.

According to interviews with MW2 developers at Infinity Ward, gifting was not a priority feature to include at release. The focus was on core gameplay for the 2022 holiday season, so we‘ll have to wait and see if it gets added later.

Gifting History in Call of Duty

Longtime COD fans will remember that gifting was introduced back in Black Ops Cold War as part of the Warzone integration in late 2020. This allowed gifting of store bundles and the battle pass to friends. It was an exciting new option to share content across your squad!

This gifting feature carried over into 2021‘s Vanguard and Warzone Pacific – but now in MW2, it‘s nowhere to be found.

Why Remove Gifting?

Eliminating gifting seems to signal that Activision wants to maximize sales by requiring each player to purchase their own bundles and battle pass. And based on huge sales numbers already, that strategy appears to be working:

MW2 First Month Sales$1 billion
Opening Weekend$800 million
Retail Units Sold11 million+

Still, fans are hopeful that gifting gets re-added down the line – or integrated as part of Warzone 2 as it evolves. Having the option to gift skins would provide another fun way to flex your squad‘s style during matches!

Methods to Share & Unlock Items in MW2

For now, outside of gifting, there are still some ways you can team up with friends to unlock items across accounts by playing together:

  • Game Sharing on Console: PlayStation & Xbox allow for the MW2 license + purchased content to be shared across accounts on the same "home" console.
  • Co-Op Grinding: Party up to complete challenges faster. You‘ll all earn the same cosmetics and blueprints!
  • Private Lobbies: Host matches with just your crew to score weapon camos and level up the Battle Pass tiers.
  • DMZ Mode: Exfiltrate rare contraband weapons unlocked via DMZ objectives to add them to your MW2 armory.

So while direct account gifting isn‘t enabled yet, playing together as a squad is still beneficial.

Gifting in Other Top FPS Franchises

For comparison, here‘s a glance at gifting functionality across some other major first-person shooters:

GameCan Gift Battle Pass? Can Gift Bundles/Skins?
Apex LegendsYesYes
Destiny 2NoNo
Rainbow Six SiegeNoYes

Apex Legends has the most gifting flexibility, likely boosting their cosmetics revenue. Rainbow Six takes the middle ground. And like MW2, Destiny 2 relies fully on individual player purchases.

The Bottom Line

So for those wondering "can I gift COD points or packs in Modern Warfare 2", the answer remains no. Activision seems to be maximizing profits by requiring separate purchases across accounts.

As a dedicated MW2 player myself, I do hope gifting gets added eventually. Being able to surprise your teammates with the battle pass or sweet weapon blueprints would add a fun social element. But for now, we‘ll just have to enjoy squadding up the old fashioned way!
