Yes, you can absolutely over level your Pokémon in Pokémon Violet

While Pokémon Scarlet and Violet do not have level scaling, you are free to grind your Pokémon‘s levels as high as you want. However, going too high too quickly can cause disobedience.

At what levels do Pokémon disobey you?

Your Pokémon‘s obedience is tied to the number of gym badges you collect:

BadgesObedience Level Cap
020
125
230
335
445
555
665
775
8No limit

So early on, it‘s easy to outpace these caps by over grinding. Having some patience and only mildly over leveling for each badge count is wise.

What is the maximum level in Pokémon Violet?

The hard level cap across all Pokémon games is 100. Once your Pokémon reaches this point through battles, it will stop earning any EXP.

This limit applies to all Pokémon – those caught in the wild, received in trades, evolved from lower forms, everything.

Level 100 Machoke -> Still level 100 Machamp after trading to evolve

Even legendary Pokémon and bosses are unable to surpass level 100. So going beyond it is impossible without exploiting glitches.

Locations and strategies to grind EXP quickly

If you wish to raise your team above the level curves of Violet‘s gyms and routes, here are excellent spots I‘ve used successfully:

North Province Area 3

This snowy plateau filled with Audino presents the fastest way to gain EXP. Audino give high rewards and respawn rapidly. With picnic EXP boost, a level 100 team is very feasible here.

West Province Area 2

The rocky, elevated trails here lead to Onix, Steelix, Chansey and other heavyweights. Solid mix of rewards and challenges.

Tagtree Thicket

Sneasler and other agile Pokémon race through this autumnal forest. LowerIndividual yields than Audino, but more engaging battles.

Diminishing returns from over leveling

There comes a point in the scaling where more levels add little extra power:

Level 95 vs. Level 100
5% stat difference

And oneshotting enemies with max power moves means little EXP gains to improve further. Unless you impose limitations on yourself, the postgame can feel monotonous.

As a player since Red and Blue, my preference is…

Is over leveling necessary in Pokémon Violet?

Not at all in my opinion! Progressing naturally and utilizing strategy to defeat the story bosses keeps things exciting. And self-imposed Nuzlocke challenges take that thrill even further.

But I understand the appeal of creating an unstoppable team of level 100s – I‘ve done it too! It can be relaxing and fun in its own way.

Just beware reaching that point too quickly can spoil some enjoyments. Finding the right balance is key.
