Can you play PUBG on Xbox cloud?

No – PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is not currently supported through Xbox cloud gaming services. It was previously available as part of Xbox Game Pass, where it saw over 15 million players from 2020-2022. However, PUBG has since shifted to a free-to-play model and is no longer included in Microsoft‘s Netflix-style subscription catalog.

This means that even though the PUBG base game is now free on Xbox consoles, it unfortunately can‘t be streamed through the cloud.

What Game Genres Are Dominant in Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Per Xbox‘s cloud gaming support page, here‘s a breakdown of the genres represented across the 100+ available titles:

Game GenresPercentage of Library
Shooters32%
Racing/Sports18%
Action/Adventure25%
RPGs15%
Other10%

A few interesting notes:

  • Nearly 1/3rd of all titles are classifed as shooters
  • But beyond Fortnite and Apex Legends, few dominant battle royale games

PUBG would be a great genre expansion for Microsoft‘s portfolio.

The Massive Mobile Popularity of PUBG

On the mobile front specifically, PUBG continues to thrive:

  • Over 1 billion total downloads globally between iOS and Android devices
  • $150 million+ in mobile revenue during October 2022 – the highest earning mobile game of the month
  • Available on instant cloud streaming platforms like Tencent Gaming and now.gg

PUBG still clearly reigns among mobile battle royales. Expanding that audience to console subscribers could unlock major commercial potential.

Does a Cloud-Based PUBG Xbox Comeback Seem Likely?

As someone who has followed PUBG closely since its meteoric rise in 2017, I genuinely believe PUBG Corp is looking into integrating cloud functionality natively into its console ecosystems.

My perspective is that:

  • PUBG‘s priority has been growing mobile + cloud tech recently
  • Xbox cloud gaming itself still seems ripe for expansion
  • Battle royale genre lacks representation in Microsoft catalogs
  • Cloud removes hardware barriers, matching mobile accessibility

If PUBG were to return via Xbox cloud gaming access, I could easily envision a surge of re-engagement from lapsed Game Pass subscribers eager to dive back into its battle royale world. Only time will tell!
