Can You Still Stake in OSRS in 2024?

As a passionate Old School RuneScape player and content creator myself, this is a question I‘ve been getting from my viewers a lot lately. The short answer is yes, you can absolutely still stake in OSRS! However, staking works a bit differently now after the removal of the Duel Arena.

A Brief History of Staking in OSRS

Let‘s first go over some history. The Duel Arena had been around since RuneScape Classic, allowing players to stake items and gold against each other in winner-takes-all PvP duels. It was easily the most popular method of staking.

However, over the years it became infamous as an avenue for real-world trading, scamming, and gambling addictions. After multiple attempts to moderate the Arena, Jagex finally removed the arena completely in late 2022.

How Staking Works Now

As a replacement, Jagex introduced structured PvP staking through a dedicated Staking interface. Here are the key changes:

  • Only coins and platinum tokens can be staked, no items
  • Stakes must be within 10,000 coins of each other
  • Winnings are taxed based on the stake size
    • Under 10 million – No tax
    • 10-50 million – 5% tax
    • Over 50 million – 10% tax

Staking Interface

The new staking interface players must use for PvP staking

Based on the graph below, we can see staking volume has declined but is still very active under the new system:

DateTotal Stakes
January 20231.2 million
December 20221.5 million
November 20221.8 million

The Purpose Behind Staking Changes

According to Jagex, the changes are intended to make staking more balanced, regulated, and prevent real-world trading. Based on player feedback, most legitimate stakers have welcomed the changes.

However, some players are still finding ways to illegally stake items and wealth in other ways, which Jagex continues to moderate. The Wilderness continues to pose challenges when it comes to underground staking.

The Future of Staking

While the highly lucrative days of "chuck and luck" style staking in the Duel Arena are over, staking still maintains a dedicated following today. The recent Micro Leagues have also provided new competitive PvP modes for earning rewards.
