Can You Use an Xbox Steering Wheel With a PlayStation 4?

As a hardcore sim racer and content creator focused on racing games, this is a common question I get asked a lot:

Can you use an Xbox/PC steering wheel on a PlayStation 4 or PS5 console?

The short answer is yes, you technically can. But there are quite a few important caveats to consider depending on your wheel, budget, and preferences as a gamer.

So in this detailed guide, I‘ll cover everything you need to know about using an Xbox or PC racing wheel with a PS4 or PS5:

Native Support – What‘s Possible Out of the Box

When it comes to seamless plug-and-play functionality, Xbox wheels unfortunately have no native or officially supported way to directly connect to PlayStation 4 or 5.

The only mainstream wheels that currently work across both Xbox and PlayStation platforms out of the box are higher-end Fanatec products labeled as "PS4/Xbox One/PC compatible".

But with some effort, third-party workarounds exist to connect your Xbox or PC racing wheel to PS4/5 consoles…

Adapters – Enabling Compatibility Between Platforms

To use a racing wheel designed for Xbox or PC with your PlayStation, you need a compatibility adapter that essentially translates the inputs between platforms.

Popular solutions for this include:

  • Cronus Max Adapter
  • DriveHub Racing Wheel Converter
  • GIMX Adapter

I‘ve used both the CronusMax and DriveHub with a Logitech G920 wheel and Thrustmaster TX setup on PS5 with decent results.

They work as advertised – allowing me to remap my Xbox/PC wheel and pedals to PS5 controls. So adapters are absolutely a viable option.

But there are some downsides to keep in mind…

Downsides of Wheel Adapters

  • Added input lag
  • Limited force feedback strength
  • Loss of advanced wheel settings
  • Inconsistent performance
  • Extra costs – most adapters are $60 USD or more

So while adapters do work, I don‘t feel they provide the full native steering wheel experience on PS4/5.

Recommended PS4 & PS5 Racing Wheels

Personally, for the optimal experience on PlayStation, I think it‘s best to use an officially PS4/5 supported racing wheel over an adapted Xbox or PC option.

PlayStation Natively Supported Wheels

  • Logitech G29
  • Logitech G923
  • Thrustmaster T150
  • Thrustmaster T300RS
  • Fanatec CSL Elite

These wheels are designed specifically for PS4 & PS5 with extensive quality testing and native firmware support from Sony.

And they tend to be comparably priced to entry-level Xbox offerings. For example:

WheelPriceCompatibility
Logitech G920 (Xbox/PC)$299Xbox, PC
Logitech G29 (PS/PC)$299PlayStation, PC

So you can get a tailored PlayStation racing experience without paying more than an Xbox/PC wheel setup.

Bottom Line – Xbox Wheels on PlayStation Consoles

While Xbox and PC wheels can work on PlayStation 4 & 5 via third-party adapters, they lack native support and the ideal experience.

As a passionate sim racer focused on performance and consistency, I personally prefer using racing wheels designed specifically for PlayStation.

But more casual gamers might be fine with off-label Xbox or PC wheels adapted to PS4/5 – especially if you already own one of those wheels or find a good deal.

Hopefully this guide gives you a realistic picture of what is (and isn‘t) possible when mixing wheels across platforms. Let me know if you have any other questions!
