Do they make PSP games anymore?

Hey fellow gamers! If you‘re still holding onto your PlayStation Portable, you may be wondering if new PSP games are even still being released. I mean, it‘s a classic handheld, but production ended years ago, right? Well, let‘s dive into the details!

The Cold Hard Truth

I‘ve got some unfortunate news right off the bat – PSP game card and disc production officially ended back in 2016. According to Sony‘s reported timeline, they wrapped up worldwide hardware shipping in 2014, and the last factory producing UMD game discs closed its doors at the end of 2016.

So no, game developers and publishers are not actively making NEW games for the PSP in 2024. That production line has closed down.

Following the Digital Breadcrumbs

There is a glimmer of hope though! An avid gamer can still buy and download digital PSP games through the PlayStation Store on both PS3 and PS Vita hardware.

So you can still grow your game collection if you have a PlayStation Network Account. Over 800 PSP games appear in search results on the web storefront as I‘m writing this.

Now, you may be wondering…

Will They Ever Make More PSP Games?

If physical production shut down over 5 years ago, surely game developers have all moved on from supporting the aging device?

Well, according to Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President for Platform Planning & Management at Sony:

"We are still hard at work making games for all of our platforms, including the PSP."

…of course, he said that in 2008 shortly after the PSP 3000 launched. 😆 The environment sure has changed!

In all seriousness, the chances seem very slim that many if any brand new PSP game releases are on the horizon.

A few more localized classics or remasters may trickle out digitally over time. But with resources focused on PS4, PS5, and PSVR, counting on new titles seems unwise.

Should You Buy Into PSP Nostalgia?

So production ended years ago, no new game development is really happening, and even digital releases are slowing to a crawl.

Is dusting off your old PlayStation Portable still worth it in 2024? Or is this retro handheld better left to fond memories of the late 2000s?

Well…I think there‘s still fun gaming value to be had! Assuming you don‘t already have one, picking up a used PSP 3000 model for under $60 is still worthwhile in my book.

If you jailbreak it, the homebrew community makes enjoying emulators and ported titles possible too. And from action hits like God of War: Chains of Olympus to RPGs like Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, the PSP offers hundreds of still-entertaining exclusives.

Sure, you aren‘t likely to see cutting edge new releases. But for some gaming together time with your kids or pure retro nostalgia, grabbing a PSP still serves up lots of fun from that bygone era of handhelds.

Let me know what YOU think – is retro PSP gaming still worth it? I read all your comments!
