Does 2K23 current gen transfer to next gen?

As an avid NBA 2K gamer and content creator, one of the most common questions I‘ve been getting lately is: "Does your MyPLAYER, MyTEAM, VC, and other progress carry over if you upgrade from an Xbox One/PS4 to an Xbox Series X/PS5?"

The Short Answer

To give a clear answer upfront – some of your NBA 2K23 progress does transfer between console generations, while other elements reset or do not carry over. Specifically:

  • Your MyTEAM collections, cards, tokens, points and overall progress will transfer over to the next gen version via Cross-Progression.
  • Your Virtual Currency (VC) wallet is shared and transferable to next gen consoles from the same family.
  • However, your MyCareer mode player, badges, overall rating DO NOT carry over to next gen.

So in summary, MyTEAM and VC remain intact when upgrading consoles, but your personal MyPlayer creation starts fresh on next gen 2K23. I‘ll break down the specifics around exactly HOW these various game modes and currencies transfer later in this guide.

NBA 2K23‘s Popularity by the Numbers

Before getting into the transfer specifics, let‘s examine why so many fans invest themselves into the NBA 2K series year after year:

  • As of September 2022, the NBA 2K franchise has sold over 118 million units lifetime.
  • NBA 2K23 sold over 5 million copies globally in its first week.
  • Over 2 million daily active players logged into 2K22‘s MyCAREER mode on average.
  • The record for highest rated 2K player is a 99 Overall in 2K21.

With these incredible engagement statistics, it‘s no wonder fans are invested in carrying over their hard-earned progression after pouring hours upon hours into various 2K23 modes. Now let‘s break down exactly HOW and WHAT transfers over console generations.

MyTEAM Cross-Progression Explained

For all you avid MyTEAM collectors out there, you‘ll be happy to know that your cards, tokens, lifetime agenda rewards and more DO carry over to next gen consoles. Specifically:

  • Cards in Your Collection
  • Lifetime Agenda Progress
  • Token Rewards
  • MyTEAM Points
  • Triple Threat Online Progress
  • Limited Event/Reward Progress

Essentially, every aspect of your MyTEAM profile persists if you upgrade from a PS4/Xbox One to a PS5/Xbox Series X|S. I cannot stress enough how hugely valuable this Cross-Progression is for die-hard Ultimate Team gamers.

Imagine locking in 1000+ cards only to start back at zero in next gen – no one would ever upgrade! Thankfully, 2K recognized this and we reap the benefits.

Now you may be wondering – with MyTEAM offering a unified experience across generations, does this mean I can match up against next gen players while on my Xbox One?

No Cross-Play Between Generations

Unfortunately cross-play between console generations is STILL not supported in any way for NBA 2K23, despite MyTEAM unifying collections across generations. Hopefully this is addressed in future 2K titles, but for now Xbox One players will ONLY match up against others on Xbox One, not Series X.

MyCareer Player Reset Explained

Now for the bad news if you‘re a die-hard MyCareer grinders. While your MyTEAM stays intact when upgrading console generations, your MyPlayer builds, badges, attribute upgrades DO NOT carry over up into the next gen versions of NBA 2K23.

This means that PS5 & Xbox Series X|S feature completely standalone player builds and progression. No matter how many hours you poured into your Playmaking Shot Creator build on PS4, that specific MyPLAYER does not exist in the PS5 game.

I realize this massively sucks for those who invest deeply into MyCareer grinding. However, next gen 2K23 does introduce some excellent quality of life changes:

  • Redesigned Neighborhood with faster load times
  • Improved Badge Loadout management
  • Streamlined player Builder balancing
  • Better gradient for attribute upgrades

While your player resets, at least building them up on next gen consoles provides better underlying foundations and systems. Still, I know the reset stings – hopefully 2K changes their stance here in future titles!

At least that hard-earned VC wallet carries over though…

Shared Virtual Currency Wallet

As previously mentioned, the VC you earn playing various game modes IS shared between console generations of the same family. This means any unspent Virtual Currency persists across PS4 -> PS5 and Xbox One -> Xbox Series X|S.

This shared VC wallet is hugely beneficial for those looking to upgrade from current gen to next gen. With so many coveted cosmetics, attribute upgrades, boosts and more locked behind premium VC prices, maintaining your currency helps ease some of that MyCareer grind on next gen consoles.

Plus, any leftover VC gives you a headstart in building your MyTEAM collections. Believe me though, those shiny new Galaxy Opal card variants burn through VC FAST!

At the end of the day, Visual Concepts had to draw a line somewhere between unified and separated experiences when transitioning between console generations. Allowing VC and select game mode progressions was certainly better than NO carryover whatsoever!

My hope is that with the massive NBA 2K23 playerbase providing feedback this year, we may eventually see full profile persistence implemented in future 2K titles. But only time will tell!

The Verdict – Upgrade Carefully!

After breaking down exactly what does and does NOT carry over from current gen to next gen 2K23, I hope you have enough insight to decide if and when upgrading is right for you.

As a passionate NBA 2K gamer myself, I totally recognize the hundreds of hours that go into building up characters, card collections and currency across various game modes each year. Hopefully this guide better sets proper expectations around what transfers over console generations.

While MyTEAM and VC persist nicely onto newer consoles, the bitter MyCareer reset pill is undoubtedly tough to swallow right now. As someone who personally lost a 99 OVR Demigod, I feel that pain lol.

But with next gen 2K23 introducing a visually stunning new Jordan Challenge mode plus quality of life tweaks, I can certainly justify restarting MyPlayer one more time! Just be informed first before you upgrade to avoid any frustrations or surprises.

Let me know down in the comments what YOU think about 2K‘s current cross-progression implementation – and whether you‘ll be sticking to current or next gen 2K23 this year! Thanks for reading, and I‘ll see you all in the Neighborhood.
