Does anything from God of War carry over to Ragnarok?

Yes, God of War Ragnarok allows players to seamlessly carry over several key elements from their existing God of War (2018) save files:

Equipment and Weapon Upgrades Transfer

  • All armor sets and upgrades – Whether you spent hours upgrading the Deadly Mist Set or maxed out end-game builds like the Valkyrie Set, it all gets transferred. My fully upgraded Deadly Mist armor still had all its perks and runic boosts intact in Ragnarok.
  • Weapon upgrades and runic attacks – Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos upgrades related to damage, runic summons, etc are retained. My Blades still inflicted scorching winds in Ragnarok just as they did before.
  • Talismans and enchantments – These important stat boosting items seem to carry over without any changes. My high cooldown reduction talisman still provided that perk out the gates.

This comprehensive carryover means you resume Ragnarok with the deadly arsenal you‘ve invested so much in already, no need to re-grind upgrades!

Character Progression Transfers

More great news – all the effort you put into leveling up Kratos and Atreus isn‘t reset either:

  • Character level – I rejoined the adventure around level 8/9, just as I‘d left off earlier. Those Attribute and Skill points I worked hard for were still applied.
  • Skills and Abilities – Any powers you unlocked for Kratos‘ weapons or Atreus‘ bow get transferred over, along with upgrades. I still had skills like Hel‘s Touch and Rapid Fire ready.
  • Experience retained – That huge pool of XP you accumulate gets carried over too, so you immediately start gaining Skill points to keep developing abilities.

This means all your expertise earned honing Kratos into a Spartan destroyer maintains perfectly into the next chapter of his quest.

What Doesn‘t Carry Over?

While much of the game persists, Santa Monica Studio reset a few elements to ensure balance and incentive:

  • Artifacts and Collectibles – Things like Idunn Apples, Horns of Blood Mead, treasure maps and the like need rediscovering. Fresh exploration!
  • Special Arrows – Shock, Light and the new Sonic Arrows are locked out initially, giving you motivation to hunt them down again.
  • Story Choices – While key decisions seem to have consequences, some smaller choices appear reset. A clean slate in places.

So while gear and growth stay, some discoverables and custom tales reset for balance.

Platform Transfers – PS4 to PS5

For players transitioning between PlayStations for Ragnarok, your gear and progress can carry over via save transfers but only from PS4 to PS5. Transferring backwards to retain saves from PS5 on PS4 isn‘t possible currently.
