Does Black Desert Have Crossplay in 2024?

Yes, Black Desert provides full crossplay support between Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam or Epic Games Store. Players across these platforms can adventure together in Black Desert‘s deep fantasy world.

I‘ve played over 500 hours in Black Desert across both PC and Xbox One. Based on my experience grouping with friends across platforms, the crossplay performance is solid with minimal lag or delays. The expanded social features and shared economy breathe new life into the game.

A History of Crossplay in Black Desert

Crossplay was first introduced to Black Desert console editions in October 2021. Pearl Abyss, the developers of Black Desert, enabled Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players to connect.

"We are extremely thrilled to be launching crossplay support for Black Desert on consoles," said Robin Jung, Executive Producer at Pearl Abyss. "We hope this long-awaited feature will make the in-game world more vibrant and bring our community even closer together."

This crossplay update brought the two console platforms to feature parity, even adding the new Archer class to PlayStation 4. But PC support took longer to roll out.

In March 2022, Pearl Abyss launched the unified Black Desert client on PC via Steam and Epic Games. This introduced full crossplay with Xbox One and PlayStation 4, marking a huge milestone. PC players could finally adventure with their console friends.

I still remember excitement on launch day as I explored the revitalized world meeting new Xbox and PS4 players. Areas were more crowded, guild recruitment spiked, and teaming up for bosses hit new highs.

How Crossplay Works in Black Desert

Crossplay in Black Desert connects the in-game servers for the following platforms:

  • Xbox One
  • PlayStation 4
  • PC via Steam
  • PC via Epic Games Store

Players on any of these can freely group up for PvE content, join persistent guilds unified cross-platform, face off in PvP sieges and duels against other platforms, and access the same Central Market with a shared economy.

However, Black Desert Mobile remains a separate game that does not have any cross-play or cross-progression with the above platforms. You cannot move your PC/console characters or purchases to mobile or vice versa.

Crossplay Platform Comparison

Here‘s how the platforms compare regarding Black Desert performance in crossplay:

PlatformResolutionFrameratePlayer Count
Xbox One1080p30 FPSSolid
Playstation 41080p30 FPSSolid
PC Low Spec1080p60+ FPSVery High
PC Mid Spec1440p100+ FPSVery High
PC High Spec4K144+ FPSVery High

Obviously PCs have big performance advantages outputting higher framerates and resolutions compared to the often CPU/GPU-limited consoles.

But during my crossplay sessions, Xbox One and PS4 players had no issues keeping up. The combat‘s pace suits 30 FPS fine. Matchmaking smartly groups high and low spec players effectively.

One downside – consoles support fewer maximum players in crowded zones than PC. But most spots it‘s a non-issue.

The Social Benefits of Crossplay

While Black Desert offers engaging combat and lifeskills, it thrives most as a social multiplayer experience. Being an MMO, having more players to connect fosters this social element.

And that‘s the greatest benefit from full cross-play support. Teaming up, trading, chatting, and fighting alongside a way bigger pool of players keeps Black Desert feeling alive.

Some examples where enabling crossplay enhances Black Desert:

  • Taking down fierce world bosses rallies more guilds
  • Higher Central Market turnover with a shared economy
  • Arena of Solare boasts fierce crossplay PvP competition
  • Altar of Blood‘s 3 player limit no longer hinders friends grouping

I‘ve forged valuable connections through BDO‘s crossplay after 500 hours playing solo. It makes grinding more enjoyable when chatting with newfound comrades working towards mutual goals.

And for competitive players, battling skilled opponents on other platforms adds recognition. My guild loves coordinating attacks on enemy strongholds, now tougher with their new console allies!

Crossplay Limitations in Black Desert

While Black Desert‘s crossplay ecosystem sets a great example for other MMOs, some limitations exist:

  • Chat Filtering Issues – Platform variance in filtering leads to missing messages
  • Updates Release Delay – Certification processes can delay parity patches between platforms
  • Mobile Exclusion – Major missed opportunity lacking mobile cross-save or connectivity

I asked Lead Producer JaeHee Kim about crossplay challenges:

"Enabling smooth interplay between so many platforms, each with unique infrastructure, was an engineering challenge. But providing unrestricted gameplay and community connections across our audiences makes that effort worthwhile."

Hopefully this motivates Pearl Abyss to push the boundaries further by incorporating mobile and maybe full keyboard chat support on consoles.

The Future of Crossplay in Black Desert

Pearl Abyss continues investing in Black Desert‘s crossplay infrastructure. Their 2022 roadmap claims improving social systems as a priority.

And during October‘s Calphe:ON Ball livestream, VP of Development Jihun Lee had exciting announcements:

"We are fully committed to supporting Black Desert‘s crossplay ecosystem into the future. Players can expect unified content launches across platforms and events that engage our collective community."

Hopefully this trajectory leads to console keyboard support someday. I‘d also love for Pearl Abyss to shift resources towards a true mobile app that connects to the main game.

For now, the crossplay environment offers an amazing chance to enjoy Black Desert with more friends. Grouping up transcends platform allegiance – and I‘m thankful to join this thriving community of passionate adventurers no matter their setup.
