Does the PS4 Pro Support 2TB SSD Storage Upgrades?

As a passionate gamer and hardware tinkerer, one of my favorite DIY upgrades for the PS4 Pro is swapping the internal hard drive out for a fast, high capacity solid state drive (SSD). And I‘m happy to report that yes, you can absolutely install a 2TB SSD inside your PS4 Pro for a serious speed boost along with plenty of storage space!

In this epic guide, I‘ll show you everything you need to know about upgrading to a 2TB SSD in your trusty PS4 Pro. Let‘s jump in!

Stock PS4 Pro Storage Specs and Limitations

The standard PS4 Pro comes equipped with a 1TB 5400RPM hard disk drive (HDD). This mechanical drive has super slow read/write speeds that bottleneck how quickly games can load or install. Here‘s a spec overview:

  • Capacity: 1TB
  • Interface: SATA III
  • Average Read Speed: Up to 140 MB/s
  • Average Write Speed: Up to 60 MB/s

While 1TB does offer a good amount of game storage, the achilles heel is definitely the sluggish HDD. And unfortunately the PS4‘s stock drive speed is pretty much as "good" as it gets for mechanical hard drives.

Even heavier duty 7200 RPM HDDs only provide around a 20% speed bump, which is still crawling compared to SSD performance.

SSDs Are Lightning Fast – Perfect for Gaming!

Solid state drives use cutting edge NAND flash chips to store data instead of old school spinning platters. The results are staggering read/write speed improvements:

 HDDSSD
InterfaceSATA IIISATA III
Read SpeedUp to 160MB/sUp to 560MB/s
Write SpeedUp to 60MB/sUp to 530MB/s

As you can see, SSDs absolutely destroy HDDs when it comes to sequential throughput. All of that speed adds up to much faster game load times that you‘ll notice immediately after installing an SSD.

We‘re talking shaving dozens of seconds off loading screens in big titles like Red Dead Redemption 2. Plus significantly faster installs when patching or downloading new games. The performance upgrade is incredible!

Beyond raw speed, SSDs also provide better reliability and durability thanks to a lack of moving parts. So your precious game library will stay safer stored on flash memory vs. fragile platter drives.

PS4 Pro SSD Size and Compatibility

The great news is Sony built the PS4 Pro with SSD compatibility and upgrades in mind. The internal drive bay accepts 2.5" SATA III SSDs up to 8TB in capacity. I‘ll explain some recommendations in the next section.

You can also utilize external SSDs connected over USB 3.0. But internal drives connected directly via SATA provide the fastest speeds. More on config comparisons later!

No matter which route you choose, a 2TB SSD is a perfect "Goldilocks" sized upgrade that provides gobs of game storage along with way better load time performance than the stock HDD.

Best 2TB SSDs for PS4 Pro Upgrades

Now for the fun stuff – 2TB SSD shopping! Based on lots of hands-on testing and performance analysis, here are my top recommendations:

Samsung 870 EVO 2TB

  • Sequential Reads: Up to 560MB/s
  • Sequential Writes: Up to 530MB/s
  • Warranty: 5 years
  • Price: $250

Samsung makes the absolute best SATA SSDs. The 870 EVO is no exception with class-leading speeds up to 560/530 MB/s read/write. This drive will transform your PS4 Pro‘s performance!

WD Blue SN570 2TB

  • Sequential Reads: Up to 550MB/s
  • Sequential Writes: Up to 520MB/s
  • Warranty: 5 years
  • Price: $190

Western Digital‘s SN570 is another excellent choice especially if you want to save a few bucks. Real world results are right in line with Samsung‘s flagship despite the lower cost.

Crucial MX500 2TB

  • Sequential Reads: Up to 560MB/s
  • Sequential Writes: Up to 510MB/s
  • Warranty: 5 years
  • Price: $200

The MX500 from Crucial hits peak read speeds of 560MB/s matching Samsung‘s 870 EVO. For a bit less cash, you still get blistering SSD performance perfect for your souped up PS4.

Step-by-Step: Installing a 2TB SSD in Your PS4

I‘ll walk you through the easy process of swapping the PS4 Pro‘s internal hard drive for your shiny new 2TB SSD:

  1. Back up your game data – You‘ll lose everything stored locally when replacing the system drive. So make sure to back up your saves either to the cloud or external USB storage.

  2. Power down and unplug PS4 – Safely shutdown and power off the console then unplug all cables. Also discharge any static buildup by touching grounded metal.

  3. Remove case cover – carefully use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the PS4 cover. Locate the internal hard drive bay.

  4. Extract old HDD – Remove the four mounting screws to slide out the stock 1TB hard disk drive.

  5. Insert new 2TB SSD – Line up your SSD‘s SATA connector with the drive bay slot and gently press into place. Reinsert and tighten the four mounting screws.

  6. Replace case – Carefully replace the outer PS4 case cover and re-connect all cables.

  7. Power up and format drive – Turn your PS4 back on! The system will auto-detect the new drive and walk you through setup and formatting.

That‘s all there is to it. The whole DIY upgrade takes under 30 minutes even for total beginners. And anyone comfortable dismantling gadgets shouldn‘t break a sweat.

Internal vs. External SSD Setup Comparison

While the upgrade guide focuses on installing an SSD internally, you can also utilize external SSD solutions. Let‘s discuss the pros and cons of each approach.

Internal SSD

  • Install directly into PS4
  • Leverages fastest SATA III connection
  • Clean, stealthy aesthetic
  • Need to teardown console

External SSD

  • Connects via rear USB 3.0
  • Simpler plug and play use
  • Portable to transport games
  • Extra cables & footprint

For peak read/write throughput to maximize game performance, I recommend going the internal route if you‘re comfortable cracking open your console.

But external SSDs still deliver great improvements over stock HDD speeds despite the slight USB 3.0 bottleneck. So they offer a simpler upgrade path for casual users.

Either way, embracing SSDs provides a big boost. And I can confidently proclaim that the PS4 Pro fully supports and excels with 2TB SSD upgrades!

The Verdict: Invest in a 2TB PS4 Pro SSD Upgrade

After thoroughly testing SSD performance in the PS4 Pro across dozens of titles, I‘m 100% convinced that upgrading to fast flash storage is one of the best investments you can make.

The 2TB capacity sweet spot coupled with at least 500MB/s rated drives completely revitalizes aging last-gen consoles. You‘ll slash loading times, streamline game patching, and vastly extend the usable lifespan of your hardware.

While next-gen PS5sContinue Reading with ReadMoare the new hotness, supplying your PS4 Pro with an SSD heart transplant buys you at least a couple more years of buttery smooth gaming.

So treat yourself and your trusty console to a refreshed experience with a great value 2TB upgrade. Your thumbs and free time will thank you!
