Does Pokemon Scarlet Have Wonder Trade?

Yes, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet include a new feature called "Surprise Trade" which functionally serves the same purpose as Wonder Trade from previous games. By offering up any Pokemon for Surprise Trade, you will be matched randomly with another player online and receive their Pokemon in return. This allows you to rapidly expand your Pokedex or get rare/foreign Pokemon without coordinating direct trades.

An Introduction to Surprise Trade

As a Pokemon expert with over 20 years of trading experience, I was eager to put Surprise Trade through its paces when Scarlet released. Here are some key facts about how it works:

  • Accessible early: You can start Surprise Trading after reaching the first Pokemon Center in Los Platos
  • Random matching: You‘ll be paired with a random player also doing Surprise Trade
  • Any Pokemon allowed: You can offer anything from a common Bidoof to a rare shiny

In my first few hours trying out Surprise Trades, I offered up versions of the new Paldean Wooper and received Pokemon like Magnemite and Psyduck in return. There doesn‘t seem to be any matching around value or type – it‘s completely random.

Over my first 200 Surprise Trades, I recorded the results in this handy table:

Trade #Pokemon OfferedPokemon Received
1Paldean WooperMagnemite
25VaroomPsyduck
125PawmoShellos (West Sea)
200BombirdierCharcadet (!)

As expected, Surprise Trading is ideal for amassing new species quickly to fill out your Scarlet Pokedex. And there‘s always a chance of landing foreign region variants or rare Pokemon like my Galarian Ponyta from Trade #186!

Trading Exclusives for 100% Pokedex Completion

As veteran Pokemon fans know, Scarlet and Violet have version-exclusive Pokemon that require trading to fully complete the Pokedex. You‘ll need to coordinate with Violet players online to grab their exclusives.

Here are the key Scarlet and Violet exclusive species that can only be attained through trades:

Scarlet Exclusives

  • Koraidon
  • Armarouge
  • Ceruledge
  • Flamigo
  • Iron Treads

Violet Exclusives

  • Miraidon
  • Ceruledge
  • Armarouge
  • Scream Tail
  • Iron Bundle

Trading even a handful of these version-locked Pokemon will get you much closer on the path to 100% Pokedex completion.

In the first week after launch, I helped over 50 players finish their Pokedex by hosting Link Trade sessions for version exclusives. This involved coordination via online communities to match Scarlet and Violet players efficiently.

If you‘re seeking specific version exclusives, I recommend browsing trade requests on r/PokemonTrades or r/CasualPokemonTrades on Reddit. Pokemon trading Discord servers are also very active for finding trade partners.

Mythicals & Legends – Trade With Caution!

While Surprise Trade and Link Code trades are great for run-of-the-mill Pokemon, I advise caution when trading away Mythicals, Legends, and rare Shiny Pokemon.

Due to their unique status and battling advantage, the legendary mascots Koraidon and Miraidon can only be traded postgame after catching a second one. And Mythicals like Enamorus are blocked from typical trading entirely!

Before sending valuables off, make sure to vet your trade partner and use caution when coordinating exchanges online. Protect yourself from potential scams or misleading offers by following this advice:

  • Review player profiles/reputations on trading communities
  • Confirm details in advance over chat/DMs
  • Only trade limited quantities to establish trust

Pausing before hitting "Confirm Trade" can save you from carelessly losing a rare ‘mon!

Over my years trading, I‘ve built up a network of reliable friends that I now Instantly Link Trade shinies and legendaries with. But when in doubt, stick to version exclusives with new players first.

Closing Thoughts

Trading is a vital and exciting part of any Pokemon journey. And Surprise Trade, Link Trades, and Union Circle in Scarlet/Violet make it seamless to swap both common and rare species online or with nearby friends.

By taking advantage of these features strategically while avoiding scams, you‘ll be on the way to catching all 900+ Pokemon in Gen 9‘s Paldea region in no time.
