How Big is Destiny 2 in 2024 with All Expansions and Content?

As a hardcore Destiny 2 player and content creator who loves sinking my teeth into new expansions, one of the first things I check with every update is how much extra drive space I‘ll need for it. And I know many in the Destiny community do the same.

So how big is Destiny 2 in 2024 with everything – all the expansions, seasons, and additional content releases? The install size is now over 100GB on all platforms.

A Ballooning Install Size

When Destiny 2 first launched in 2017, the install size was around 68GB. Reasonable even for that time period.

But with 5 years of expansions under its belt, Destiny 2‘s footprint has ballooned:

  • PC (Steam): 105GB
  • PlayStation: 102GB
  • Xbox: 102GB

These sizes include all Destiny 2 content through 2023 – the base game, Forsaken, Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, Witch Queen expansions, seasonal updates, and the recent mega-expansion Lightfall.

To put the growth into perspective, here‘s a breakdown of how much extra space each yearly expansion added:

ExpansionYearGB Added
Initial Release201768
Forsaken2018+15
Shadowkeep2019+10
Beyond Light2020+12
Witch Queen2022+15
Lightfall2023+20

As you can see, expansions have consistently added over 10GB of content each year. And the trend is going up with Lightfall cracking the 20GB mark.

Pre-Load and Update Requirements

While 100GB is the base install size for all current content, you actually need double that or close to it for major updates.

Before the launch of the Lightfall expansion for example, Bungie recommended having 223GB open space for pre-loading.

That‘s because the pre-load and installation process makes a full copy of the game files before integrating the new expansion data. This temporarily doubles the install size.

So for Destiny 2 right now, set aside at least 200GB for future major updates and pre-loads.

Optimizations Keep Things Reasonable

Despite the tower map ballooning out over the last 5 years, Bungie has managed to keep Destiny 2‘s install within reason through aggressive optimization.

According to engineering director David Aldridge:

By making smarter use of duplication reduction between content shared by different platforms as well as compression improvements, we’ve been able to keep close control over install size increases.

For example before the Beyond Light expansion, Bungie culled over 25GB of unused Destiny 2 content to curb install footprint creep.

These efforts prevent Destiny 2 from exceeded a daunting 200GB+ install that would gate many players. But further optimization may have diminishing returns going forward.

Does Destiny 2 Need a Rebuild?

With the Destiny Content Vault already holding three expansions worth of content in cold storage, Bungie is running out of superficial fat to trim.

Further reducing install size likely requires rebuilding core game systems. Perhaps paving the way for Destiny 3 one day.

But Bungie has committed to building on Destiny 2 for years without a sequel in sight. Per General Manager Justin Truman:

Destiny 2 is growing. There is no Destiny 3 in development. We are all focused on building upon the world created within Destiny 2 for many years to come.

So optimizing Destiny 2‘s ballooning install will only get harder over time. Let‘s hope technical wizardry can keep expansions rolling without exceeding our local drives!
