How big should a Minecraft house be?

As an avid Minecraft builder and content creator, one of the most common questions I get asked is "how big should my house be?" While there‘s no definitive perfect size, these guidelines will help match your house to the appropriate scale for each stage of the game.

Starting Out: Focus on Essentials in a 7×7

When first starting a new world, I always build a starter house with a 7×7 block footprint. This compact size still allows adding all the essentials:

  • Crafting, smelting and enchanting setups
  • A cozy bedroom area
  • Chests for storage
  • A small farm or animal pen

Once you progress beyond the first few nights of survival mode, this 7×7 house lets you establish your base efficiently while providing the basics needed to thrive.

Mid Game Goals: Scale Up as You Explore More

As you mine deeper, defeat bosses, and generally expand your capabilities in a world, your house should follow suit! Here are some mid-game goals to aim for:

  • 11×11 house for an armory, potion room, bigger storage
  • 15×15 to incorporate auto crop farms and animal pens for renewable resources
  • Construct an additional floor to instantly gain more living space

At this phase, don‘t be afraid to dream big and demolish small starter houses in favor much grander structures.

End Game Mansion: The Bigger the Better

Once you reach the power levels of defeating the Ender Dragon or acquiring max enchanted diamond gear, the world is your oyster in terms of base size! Construct sprawling mansions with a 20×20 block footprint or larger as a show of your newfound strength and status.

Additionally, with the power of redstone and automation, you can efficiently maintain village-sized compounds spanning over 50×50 blocks for you and all your accumulated NPC friends. The only limit is your imagination!

Key Room Dimensions To Plan For

Regardless of what game stage you‘re at, here are some key room sizes to factor into housing blueprints:

Storage

  • Early Game: Single chest (1×2)
  • Mid Game: Room with 2-4 double chests (5×5)
  • End Game: Giant warehouse full of shulker boxes (15×15+)

Farming

  • Crops: 11×11 for substantial wheat yields
  • Animals: 7×7 fits 2 cows, sheep etc comfortably
  • Huge auto farms should be 11×11 minimum

Bedrooms

  • Guest room with single bed (5×5)
  • Master bedroom with double bed and amenities (7×7)
  • Space for NPC visitors to stay (9×9)

So hopefully these Minecraft house size guidelines give you a good starting point to imagine just how big your dream bases can grow over time! Let me know if you have any other questions.
