How can I play PS5 games on my PS Vita?

As a passionate gamer and creator, I often get asked if it‘s possible to experience next-gen games on the go by playing PlayStation 5 titles on the PlayStation Vita.

I totally understand the appeal – the PS Vita is still an incredible handheld device that would be a perfect match for PS5-quality games you can take anywhere!

Unfortunately, I have to be the bearer of bad news…there is currently no direct way to play PS5 games on your PS Vita.

But don‘t stash away your Vita just yet! While technical limitations prevent direct compatibility, this article will explore alternative options, workarounds, and the future potential for on-the-go PS5 gaming.

Why PS5 Games Don‘t Natively Work on PS Vita

To understand why you can‘t insert a PS5 game into a PS Vita and start playing, we need to examine how vastly different these two Sony gaming devices are under the hood…

PS Vita Hardware Capabilities

The PS Vita packs impressive portable punch, powered by a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU and a quad-core SGX543MP4+ GPU. Combined with 512MB of RAM, the Vita outpaced anything else handhelds could muster in 2011.

But the PS5 is a massive leap over modern gaming hardware demands – and the Vita is a decade behind.

HardwarePS VitaPS5
CPUQuad-core ARM Cortex-A98-Core AMD Zen 2, 3.5GHz
GPUQuad-core SGX543MP4+10.28 TFLOPS, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz Custom RDNA 2
Memory512MB RAM16GB GDDR6, 256-bit bus

It‘s clear the meager Vita is no match for the sheer processing and graphical powerhouse that is the PS5 console!

Proprietary System Architectures

Adding to the incompatibility is Sony‘s tendency to utilize proprietary system architectures…

The PS Vita uses custom firmware and an operating system built exclusively for its unique hardware. PS5 runs an AMD Zen 2/RDNA 2 combo also custom-designed by Sony.

Without the appropriate OS and firmware, the Vita simply cannot process PS5 game data or produce visuals. Porting titles to the underpowered Vita would be near impossible.

By The Numbers: PS Vita‘s Decline and PS5‘s Dominance

You may wonder why Sony doesn‘t just optimize the PS5 and Vita to work together if people want it so badly?

Well, the hard truth is that the PS Vita is viewed as archived legacy hardware while the company focuses efforts on the PS5‘s overwhelming success:

  • As of January 2023, over 30 million PS5s have been sold compared to just 15 million PS Vitas lifetime as of 2019.
  • A sobering 87 games total were released on Vita in 2022, while the PS5 saw 579 game releases over that same period.
  • PS Vitas are no longer produced, with Sony declaring the handheld‘s shipment status as "completed" indicating no future plans.

With such minuscule ongoing Vita support compared to PS5‘s meteoric rise, significant resources are highly unlikely to be spent retroactively adding compatibility.

Hacks, Homebrews, and Emulation – Is Forced Compatibility Possible?

While native systems don‘t allow PS5 gameplay on PS Vita, PlayStation modding communities point to potential workarounds via hacking firmware or emulating hardware…

But results are mixed and still largely proof-of-concept.

Vita Homebrews

Homebrew developers have successfully jailbroken Vitas to allow running unapproved software. This opens the door for experimental mods and injecting games never intended for the device.

But as user XeroGrave explains on r/VitaPiracy:

"Even with homebrew, the Vita isn‘t strong enough in terms of hardware muscle to run something as demanding as PS5 game. Maybe simpler indie titles if someone was really determined to port it."

So while intriguing, homebrew currently offers no tangible solution.

Vita Emulation of PS5 Hardware

Theoretically, a Vita modded to emulate the PS5 hardware and OS capabilities could trick games into thinking they are running natively – similar to playing old SNES games on PC through emulators.

But accurately replicating cutting edge platforms like the PS5 on weak portable hardware is extremely difficult – and the Vita OS may remain incompatible regardless.

Renowned emulator developer Bythos calls this tactic an "impossible fantasy" on the Vita due to the vast discrepancies. Even some PS3 games see dismal results through emulation attempts.

Global Chip Shortages – The Bigger Picture

Sourcing and manufacturing the components vital for state-of-the-art gaming devices has also been severely impacted by recent semiconductor and chip shortages spurred by supply chain crises and soaring demand.

Sony is already struggling to create enough PS5 units to keep pace. So pumping funds into accessories for legacy platforms like PS Vita diverts crucial time, labor, and resources away from PS5 production.

Alas, this angle remains an unlikely route for on-the-go compatibility.

What Are the Best Alternatives for Portable PS5 Gaming?

While mobile PS5 gaming isn‘t currently feasible directly on PlayStation Vitas, some suitable alternatives do exist:

1. PS5 Remote Play on Compatible Devices

Sony‘s official PS5 Remote Play app lets you stream PS5 gameplay from the console to mobile devices like Android phones, iPhones, tablets and laptops.

  • Streams at 60fps if your connection supports it
  • Syncs your DualSense controller inputs via Bluetooth
  • Works over local WiFi or internet with good speeds

It‘s no handheld substitution, but still grants flexible portable access to your PS5 library!

2. Purchase Cross-Platform Titles

Select PS5 titles also release on PS4 or Switch that you could purchase to enjoy natively on those handhelds – especially indie games with simpler graphics.

Upcoming cross-gen examples include:

  • Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania
  • Sports Story
  • The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

Downsides are paying twice for the same game while missing PS5 features.

3. Wait to See if a New Sony Handheld Arrives

There were once rumors of an alleged "PS Vita 2" in development – however industry analyst David Gibson now reports that Sony plans no successor, crushing dreams.

Yet given Nintendo‘s prosperous portable profits from the Switch, some speculate Sony could attempt to re-enter the mobile hardware market someday. I personally hope they do!

But this is simply speculation for now and not a reliable path to expect PS5-tier handheld gaming.

The Bittersweet Reality of PS5 Gaming On-The-Go

Unfortunately, the PS Vita missed catching the PS5 compatibility train by fading out of active production long before the next-gen console launched.

And with no diect way to experience leading-edge PlayStation games portably, Vita still delivers a robust library of titles on beautiful OLED displays for dedicated fans.

I won‘t sugarcoat it – not being able to play the incredible PS5 catalogue on my beloved handheld is a tragic shame. I yearn to battle demons as a white-haired half-vampire in Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong from the comfort of my couch, bed, or even the bus!

But until Sony shocks the world with a PS5-compatible hardware revision or sequel to PS Vita itself – remote play options will have to suffice for my portable fix.

Here‘s hoping that our collective desire manifests itself someday! If anyone from Sony is reading – please know this gamer‘s wallet is ready and waiting.
