How to Quit Your Job at Walmart in 2024

Quitting a job is often stressful, but with the right approach you can resign from Walmart professionally and position yourself for future opportunities. This guide covers all the key steps to gracefully exit Walmart in 2024.

Give Adequate Notice

Giving proper notice allows Walmart to find and train your replacement with minimal disruption.

  • The standard notice period is 2 weeks, though 1 month is better for management roles. Walmart‘s policy states: "We ask that you provide us with at least two weeks advance written notice."

  • Verbally notify your direct supervisor first, then follow up with a formal resignation letter stipulating your final date. Address it to your supervisor and CC personnel/HR.

  • If urgent circumstances prevent working the full notice period, explain the situation in your letter. According to a Payscale survey, nearly 25% of people have quit a job with less than 2 weeks notice.

Return Company Property

  • Return any company property like security badges, keys, laptops, uniforms.

  • Coordinate with your manager to return proprietary materials and documents. Failure to do so may result in deductions from your final paycheck.

Receive Your Final Pay

  • You will receive your final paycheck on the next scheduled payday after your departure. For example, if your last day is a Friday and payday is every other Friday, you would be paid on the upcoming payday.

  • Confirm Walmart has your current mailing address. Direct deposit wages will process as usual.

  • Unused PTO will be paid out if you worked over 1 year, up to a maximum of 5 days.

Years at WalmartUnused PTO Payout
Less than 1 yearNo payout
1-2 yearsUp to 5 days of accrued, unused PTO
2-3 yearsUp to 5 days of accrued, unused PTO
3+ yearsUp to 5 days of accrued, unused PTO
  • If your final pay stub is not mailed, pick it up in-person at customer service.

Get Your W-2

  • W-2 forms are sent out by January 31st each year. Verify your address is current.

  • If you don‘t receive it, call the store to request another copy for in-store pick-up.

  • Your W-2 is needed to file taxes for the year you resign.

Handle Benefits

  • Your health insurance runs until the end of the calendar month of your last day. So if you resign on March 12th, coverage ends March 31st.

  • You can enroll in COBRA to continue Walmart insurance plans for 18-36 months if desired.

  • Discuss 401k options with the benefits department – you may choose to roll it over into a new employer‘s plan or IRA.

Non-Compete Agreements

  • Hourly associates: No non-compete clauses. You‘re free to work for competitors immediately after resigning.

  • Salaried managers: May be subject to 12 month non-compete prohibiting employment at close competitors like Target or Amazon. Get clarity from HR.

Eligibility for Rehire

  • After quitting, there is a 6 month waiting period before Walmart may rehire former employees.

  • Discuss your reasons for leaving with the manager. With a compelling explanation, rehire is possible.

  • Maintain positive relationships with former colleagues who can vouch for you if you wish to return.

Resigning gracefully takes forethought but following these tips will ensure a smooth offboarding from Walmart. Give adequate notice, handle benefits and paperwork, and keep things professional even after your exit.
