How do I get Nexus mods on my Steam Deck?

As an avid gamer and mod enthusiast, I was eager to install mods on my Steam Deck to customize my gaming experience. After testing out various methods, I‘ve found the most effective way to download and install Nexus mods.

Enabling Desktop Mode Gives You Access

The first step is entering Desktop Mode on your Steam Deck. This closes the standard UI and enters a Linux desktop environment that allows file system access.

You can toggle to Desktop Mode by pressing the Steam button, selecting Power, then choosing "Switch to Desktop".

Vortex – Optimized for Steam Deck Modding

With access to the underlying system, you next need a mod manager. Vortex by Nexus Mods is the best choice, with native Linux support and automatic mod deployment.

I recommend using Lutris to properly set up Vortex for SteamOS:

  1. Install Lutris from Discover
  2. Install "Vortex – Wine Steam Deck" version from Lutris store
  3. Launch Vortex from application menu

Connecting to Nexus Mods Account

On first Vortex launch, you will be prompted to link your Nexus Mods account. Log in to connect your profile so Vortex can access your download history and mod libraries.

Installing Mods Seamlessly with Vortex

Now you can visit Nexus Mods and browse for mods as normal. When downloading, select the "Vortex" option which sends the files directly to your manager.

Vortex will automatically enable and deploy the mods to your games. Simply launch titles from SteamOS and mods will be applied!

Stability Tips for Heavily Modded Games

When running many gameplay and graphic mods I‘ve seen occasional crashes. Here are some tips:

  • Install mods in small sets and test stability in between
  • Lower in-game resolution/settings to optimize performance
  • Check for known mod conflicts on description pages
  • Save early, save often! Crashing can still occur randomly

While troubleshooting might be needed, the ability to mod makes the effort worthwhile! Let me know if you have any other questions.
