How do I know what 3DS I have?
As a long-time Nintendo fan who has owned every iteration of the classic 3DS line, I often get asked, "How can you quickly figure out which version of the 3DS you have?"
Luckily, Nintendo made it easy…
Check the Model Number Text on the Back
Flipping your 3DS over to look at the printed text/logos on the rear exterior is the fastest way to identify which model you have. You‘ll see it clearly listed like "Model No. SPR-001" or "Model No. KTR-001."
Board Codes Explained
These codes give clues into the capabilities and internal hardware too. For example, boards starting with "CPUE" feature faster CPUs vs. the older "CPU" versions. And the final digit indicates region, with 0=Japan, 1=Americas, 2=Europe/Australia.
Look Up System Info in Settings
The System Settings menu displays detailed device info including model and serial numbers. From the main menu, tap the System Settings icon then scroll down and open the System Information page.
Model | System Info Designation |
---|---|
Old 3DS | SPR-001 |
New 3DS | RED-001 |
2DS | FTR-001 |
Having the exact model number is useful for troubleshooting issues, knowing firmware compatibility, and determining resale values.
Screen Size and Buttons
If you have your 3DS in front of you, check physical attributes like:
- Screen size – Old 3DS models have smaller displays vs. XL variants
- Shoulder buttons – New 3DS added ZL/ZR buttons
- 3D depth slider – 2DS lacks 3D screens entirely
This can help narrow down the model quickly. Large screen + ZL/ZR buttons = New 3DS XL!
Game and Feature Compatibility
Compare your 3DS against this compatibility matrix:
Model | New Exclusive Games | Face Tracking 3D | Built-In NFC | C-Stick, ZL/ZR Buttons |
---|---|---|---|---|
Old 3DS/3DS XL | No | No | Via accessory | No |
New 3DS/XL | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
2DS/2DS XL | No | No | Yes | No |
The New 3DS and New 2DS XL models enhanced hardware allowed exclusive games the older models couldn‘t handle.
Chargers and Styluses
While chargers remained consistent across models, check stylist differences:
- Old 3DS had a telescoping stylus
- New 3DS XL‘s stylus slides out instead
- 2DS has no stylus slot
Subtle differences, but useful for ID‘ing models!
I hope this guide gives you confidence in precisely determining your Nintendo 3DS model. As a long-time Nintendo fanboy and avid 3DS collector, feel free to hit me up if any other model questions arise!
