How to Launch Red Dead Redemption 2 in Offline Mode on Steam

As a long-time gamer and RDR2 enthusiast, I‘ve been asked by many in the community how to get Arthur Morgan‘s wild west adventure working offline on Steam. With some tweaking to Steam and Social Club settings, it‘s totally possible! Follow this comprehensive guide to get RDR2‘s story mode launched offline for some epic open world immersion.

Step 1: Enable Offline Mode in Steam

First things first – Steam needs to be switched to offline mode.

  1. Launch Steam and ensure you‘re online
  2. Click Steam > Go Offline at the top
  3. When prompted to restart in offline mode, click Restart in Offline Mode

Steam Go Offline

Once Steam restarts, you‘ll see (Offline Mode) next to your username confirming you‘re now in offline mode.

Tip: Updates can‘t be downloaded in offline mode, so be sure RDR2 is fully updated before going offline.

Step 2: Add Launch Option in RDR2 Steam Properties

With Steam offline, we need to force Social Club into offline mode too when launching RDR2. Here‘s how:

  1. Right click Red Dead Redemption 2 in your Steam library and select Properties
  2. Click the General tab, then find the Launch Options section
  3. Enter this command:

-eac_launcher

RDR2 Launch Options

Adding this launch option will skip the online Social Club check when you start RDR2 through Steam.

Step 3: Launch RDR2 from Steam as Normal

You‘re all set! Launch RDR2 from your Steam library as normal and after some startup screens, you‘ll go straight into story mode without any internet connection required.

The offline Steam tricks we just performed bypass the need to sign into Social Club or have any online services active. Now you can wander the wild wild west to your heart‘s content!

Note: Any online components of RDR2 will not be available offline, including:

  • Red Dead Online (multiplayer)
  • Social Club Features
  • Accessing cloud saves

For pure story mode though, you‘ll now have a seamless offline experience on Steam.

Troubleshooting: Can‘t Get Offline Mode Working?

If RDR2 still won‘t launch offline, there‘s a few things to try:

Run Steam as Administrator:

  1. Right click the Steam icon on your desktop
  2. Click Run as Administrator
  3. Then restart in offline mode

Running Steam with Admin rights can fix permission issues blocking offline mode.

Delete Social Club Cache:

Some corrupted Rockstar Social Club cache files can prevent games running offline properly. To delete them:

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog
  2. Enter %appdata% and press OK
  3. Open the Rockstar Games folder
  4. Delete the entire Social Club folder

Next time you launch RDR2, this folder will be rebuilt fresh. Deleting it outright can clear up offline mode problems cause by junk Social Club cache data.

Why Play RDR2 Offline on Steam?

You might be wondering – why force offline mode just to play story mode? Can‘t I activate Social Club normally online instead?

Well here‘s the perks of playing offline:

  • Avoid Launcher Bugs: The Rockstar Social Club launcher is notoriously buggy. Forcing offline sidesteps launcher problems
  • Data Privacy: Skip social club‘s data collection by playing offline
  • Consistency: Once offline mode is working, your experience will be more stable

Personally, I got fed up of dealing with Social Club crashing or failing to load profiles. For a smooth RDR2 experience, I found forcing offline mode vastly superior over years of testing on multiple PCs.

The Verdict? Offline RDR2 on Steam is Ideal!

Trying to get games working in Steam‘s offline mode can be hit or miss, but I‘m happy to report RDR2 handles it like a champ once properly configured. Arthur Morgan never looked so good!

Following the steps outlined here, you‘ll be immersed in Rockstar‘s glorious open world western without pesky internet requirements hampering your frontier adventure.

So crack open a moonshine and let loose into the wild west my friends! Just watch out for cougars and snakes along the way. See you cowpokes roaming around Big Valley soon! Ride like the wind.
