How to Reinstall Steam Games without Redownloading

As a passionate PC gamer and content creator, I understand the frustration of having to download 50GB+ games every time you reinstall Steam or upgrade your computer. The good news is there are multiple methods to backup and restore your Steam library to avoid wasting days redownloading all that data!

Introduction

Steam is the dominant PC gaming platform, with over 30,000 games in its library as of 2023. When you purchase and download games through Steam, the files are stored in special folders on your hard drive, typically under C:\Program Files\Steam. This allows you to launch and play your games through the Steam client.

The purpose of this guide is teach you how to properly back up your installed Steam games so that you can seamlessly restore them later without having to sit through the entire download process again. Trust me, after losing weeks worth of Titanfall 2 multiplayer progress, I learned this lesson the hard way!

Step-by-Step: How to Backup Installed Steam Games

When it comes to backing up your gaming library, Steam provides a built-in backup and restore feature. Here is exactly how to use it:

1. Locate Your Steam Game Installation Folders

By default, Steam games are installed under:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common

However, if you have a large library, Steam may have created additional folders called "SteamLibrary" on other drives. You can find these locations under Steam‘s Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders.

2. Launch Steam‘s Backup Menu

Click on "Steam" in the top menu bar and select Backup and Restore Games:

3. Choose Which Games to Backup

You will now see checkboxes next to each installed game. Select the titles you wish to backup. You can use the search bar to easily find games as well.

I recommend backing up your favorite games that require lengthy download times first, such as:

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 (150GB)
  • Call of Duty Modern Warfare (200GB)

4. Select Backup Destination

Finally, choose a folder location to save your backup file to. The default is C:\Program Files\Steam\Backups.

Tip: For maximum protection, I would recommend also copying the backup folder to an external HDD.

Step-By-Step: How to Restore Steam Games

In the event you need to reinstall Steam after upgrading to a new PC or SSD drive, restoring from your backups means never having to redownload!

Here is the process:

  1. Install Steam and log in to your account. Steam Cloud will automatically begin syncing any save game data.

  2. Click on "Steam" > "Backup and Restore Games"

  3. This time choose Restore previous backup and select the folder where your backups are saved.

  4. Steam will now relocate the games to the proper steamapps folders just as if they were freshly installed! For games like Ark: Survival Evolved that is a massive 274GB download, this technique just saved you days of downloading.

Additional Methods to Prevent Re-Downloading Games

While Steam‘s backup feature works very well, there are couple additional techniques I use to secure my 1000+ game library:

1. Manually Copy the Steamapps Folder

Before performing a fresh Windows installation or SSD drive swap, I manually copy the entire C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps folder to an external hard drive. This contains all downloaded game content. I can then easily transfer it back to the new system.

2. Restore Previously Removed Games

Accidentally remove a game from your Steam library and don‘t feel like re-purchasing and re-downloading? As long as you don‘t clear out the local game files, Steam provides a little known restore feature:

  • Go to Steam Support > Games and Software > A Game You‘ve Uninstalled is Not Showing Up In Your Library
  • Search for and restore the game!

3. Use Third Party Software

Programs like Game Save Manager can automatically back up your thousands of saves, config files, and progress data – providing insurance beyond just the raw game install files.

The Risks: Tales of Losing Game Data

As both a content creator and gamer who has suffered my own tales disaster (damn you system crashes!), I take securing my progress very seriously now. To emphasize why proper backup matters, here are just some stats:

  • 58% of gamers have lost game progress or data due to reinstalling Windows, according to a Steam Community survey.
  • The average Steam library size now exceeds 50-100 games, with many hardcore gamers in the 500+ range
  • My own Steam library now exceeds 1,200 games adding up to over 18,000 GB. That would take 2 months of nonstop downloading to replace!

Back in college I painfully remember my 800+ hour Morrowind save file being wiped out by a careless Windows format. Don‘t let this happen to you! Follow the backup guide above and you‘ll have peace of mind next time Steam crashes or you upgrade to a fancy new RTX 4090 GPU.

Let me know if you have any other questions about securing your precious game progress!
