How do I share my screen on Netflix on Discord mobile?

As an avid gamer who loves hanging out with friends on Discord while watching movies, I was pumped when Netflix announced I could share my at-home binges from a mobile device. Finally, no more cramming around someone‘s laptop! 📱📺

But when I tried to share Netflix from my phone on a Discord voice channel…☹️ Nothing happened! The screen stayed stubbornly black. After some frustrated Googling, I realized mobile sharing is WAY more complicated than it should be. 🤬

Turns out, while Discord supports mobile screen sharing, Netflix actively blocks it. Something about "content protection" – but isn‘t sharing movies with your crew the whole POINT of Netflix & chill?!

I know I can‘t be alone in wanting this. Over 150 million peeps use Discord every month, and roughly 30% log in via mobile. And Netflix? A whopping 223 million mobile subscribers as of October 2022.

Clearly, people want to share streaming magic from their pocket rectangles! But thanks to DRM – short for "Digital Rights Management" – our hands are tied right now. 😔

So is mobile Netflix sharing on Discord impossible? Not quite…it just requires some workarounds. After experimenting A LOT over the past few weeks, here are the best options I‘ve found:

Mirror to a Laptop via AirPlay

If you‘re on iOS, AirPlay mirroring lets you beam your phone‘s screen up to a Mac or PC. From there you can share your computer display on Discord like normal.

Upsides:
◾ Simple, uses built-in iPhone tools
◾ Streams directly from Netflix mobile app

Downsides:
◾ Glitchy performance
◾ Only works for Apple folk

Steps:

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer via AirPlay
    • On iPhone, open Control Center and tap Screen Mirroring. Choose your computer
  2. Share full desktop screen in your Discord voice channel
  3. Start Netflix on your phone and it "airs" on your computer
  4. Friends see everything on your iPhone as you watch shows!

The Third-Party App Hack Using SquadStream

If janky AirPlay isn‘t your jam, apps like SquadStream add a middleman. Watch Netflix mobile on SquadStream, then stream that to Discord. Extra steps, but gets the job done!

Upsides:
◾ Works on both iPhone & Android
◾ Less laggy than AirPlay

Downsides:
◽ Requires installing extra software
◽ Netflix experience not as seamless

Steps:

  1. Get SquadStream from the App Store or Play Store
  2. Open a screen share stream on SquadStream desktop
  3. Join same stream on mobile and share Netflix screen
  4. SquadStream pushes that feed to Discord = mobile Netflix share!

No matter how you slice it, mobile sharing isn‘t seamless…yet. But as demand grows, Netflix or Discord may get crackin‘ on improving compatibility. And I‘ll be right here testing the second they drop official support! 😁

In the meantime – grab some popcorn, rally your party, and give the workarounds a go. A couple extra taps is worth hanging with your crew, even if just on phone-sized Netflix.

Let‘s just hope Discord and Netflix get their technical act together soon before I hurl my iPhone across the room! 😆 Till next time my discordant internet compadres!
