How long will Battlefield 2042 be supported?

As a passionate Battlefield gamer and content creator, I‘ve been closely following the journey of Battlefield 2042 since its rocky launch in November 2021. Based on EA and DICE‘s public commitments, Battlefield 2042 will continue receiving support and updates through 2023.

Specifically, EA has promised 4 seasons of new content, with the 4th season expected around June 2023. Each season brings new specialists, maps, weapons, vehicles, game modes, and quality of life improvements. The 4th season will mark the end of content updates based on what‘s been shared so far.

However, it‘s possible support may extend into 2024 and beyond. We‘ll have to wait and see how the game performs throughout 2023 – if player counts, revenue, and sentiment remain strong, that may motivate EA to invest in year 2 content.

Now let‘s dig deeper into some player data, feedback, and areas requiring improvement:

Player Base and Sentiment Analysis

Launch month saw a peak concurrency of over 100k players on Steam. But that quickly declined in the following months down to around 10-20k average players. The lack of content updates and ongoing technical issues contributed to this drop-off.

However, the recent Season 1 and 2 updates have created a bit of a comeback. Concurrency is back up to nearly 70k players at times per SteamDB. And Reddit discussions showcase some renewed optimism and fun.

But overall sentiment remains mixed, as many are still waiting for more maps, weapons, and fixes before declaring the game truly turned around.

Launch Month Peak (Nov 2021)Over 100,000 concurrent players
Post-Launch Low (March 2022)Around 15,000 concurrent players
Current Peak (March 2023)Nearly 70,000 concurrent players

In summary – the player base saw significant decline post-launch but is now rebounding slowly. Much more improvement needed to realize Battlefield 2042‘s full potential.

Key Areas Still Requiring Improvement

Below I‘ve highlighted some of the biggest complaints and areas of improvement noted by players, creators, and reviewers:

  • Lack of classic Battlefield sandbox mode. Current modes don‘t facilitate the same creativity & chaos as the best Battlefield moments.
  • Not enough maps and variety so far. Each season only adds 1 new map which isn‘t enough.
  • Weapons could use more attachments and customization options.
  • Visual glitches and bugs continue plaguing gameplay.
  • Vehicle and flight controls need tuning to find the sweet spot.

Addressing this feedback with significant improvements should be the development team‘s focus throughout 2023.

The Road Ahead…

EA taking Battlefield 2042 free-to-play for a week this March brought an influx of new players. And the feedback seemed relatively positive as people got to check out how far the game has come since launch.

I‘m cautiously optimistic about seeing this game realize its potential by the end of 2023. The foundation and gameplay loop finally feels promising.

But only time will tell if players stick around for the long haul. EA must stay laser focused on delivering players MORE – more maps, more guns, more fixes, more content. That path should organically rebuild the Battlefield community back to where it deserves to be.

I‘ll be reporting back regularly with updates on the continued evolution of Battlefield 2042!
