How Many Bosses Are There in Terraria?

As an avid Terraria player and guide writer, this is one of the most common questions I see from new players. So let‘s take a deep dive into the complete boss lineup!

In total, Terraria currently contains 19 epic boss encounters – 7 pre-Hardmode bosses, 10 Hardmode bosses, and 2 secret bonus bosses added in later updates.

Pre-Hardmode Terraria Bosses

Before activating Hardmode by defeating the dreaded Wall of Flesh, you must vanquish these 7 bosses in order:

BossHealthDamageDifficulty
King Slime200060Easy
Eye of Cthulhu2800100Medium
Eater of Worlds800080Medium
Brain of Cthulhu1000100Medium
Queen Bee320080Easy
Skeletron4200120Hard
Wall of Flesh8000120Hard

While most players fight the Eye of Ctulhu first, the King Slime is a nice starter boss to get your feet wet. I‘d rank Skeletron and the Wall of Flesh as the trickiest pre-Hardmode fights.

Based on my experience, optimal gear before fighting Wall of Flesh includes:

  • Full Molten/Necro armor
  • Phoenix Blaster or Minishark
  • Plenty of healing potions!

Hardmode Bosses

Once Wall of Flesh is down, the world enters Hardmode. Brace yourself for 3 mechanical menaces, then ancient jungle guardians, before culminating in Terraria‘s ultimate adversary – the Moon Lord himself!

BossHealthDamageDifficulty
The Twins43,000180Hard
The Destroyer80,000150Very Hard
Skeletron Prime44,000210Very Hard
Plantera30,000150Hard
Golem39,000220Hard
Duke Fishron50,000230Very Hard
Lunatic Cultist40,000250Very Hard
Moon Lord145,000500Extreme
Empress of Light140,000420Extreme
Queen Slime (secret boss)9,767230Hard

I still have nightmares about some Hardmode boss fights, like the brutal Destroyer probe onslaught. Fishron and the Moon Lord took me days of attempts to finally conquer!

To prepare for Hardmode bosses, you‘ll need to smash Demon Altars to spawn Hardmode metals for gear upgrades. I recommend going for Frost or Titanium armor at minimum before taking on mechanical bosses.

Secret Bonus Bosses

In addition to the main bosses above, Terraria also contains a few hidden special boss encounters for players to discover:

Empress of Light – A goddess of pure light who can be summoned in the Hallow or underground layer biomes. Her signature "Bullet Hell" attack is almost undodgegable without high-speed accessories! Drops useful endgame mage gear.

Queen Slime – Found very rarely in the outer thirds of the map. Quick and chaotic fight with ninja-like teleports and minions. Great source early Hardmode gear like the Blade Staff or Gelatinous Pillion mount.

I loved the extra challenge these bonus bosses added once I thought I‘d seen all Terraria had to offer!

Speculation on Upcoming Bosses

While update 1.4.4 is still fresh, I‘m already eager to theorycraft what epic boss battles could arrive in future Terraria versions!

I wouldn‘t be surprised to see a new Snow or Ice Biome boss, given the expanded winter underground features in 1.4.4. Perhaps we could also expect another dimension Traveling Merchant brings items from, leading to a paradox-themed boss? Maybe even a giant Venus Fly Trap monster lurking in lush underground jungles!

No matter what bosses lie ahead, with 11 massive free updates under its belt already Terraria will continue to gift us almost endless adventures and surprises for years to come. I can‘t wait to band together with friends to unravel those mysteries and triumph over whatever nightmares the code wizards at Re-Logic still have in store!
