Saddle Up: Red Dead Redemption 2 Runs at 30fps on PS5

I have some unfortunate news for my fellow outlaws hoping to rampage through the Old West at silky smooth speeds. According to tests, Red Dead Redemption 2 is currently locked at 30 frames-per-second when playing on PlayStation 5.

That means despite the PS5‘s mighty graphical prowess, we‘re stuck at the same ol‘ 30fps limit RDR2 had on PS4 Pro. But don‘t stash away your six shooter just yet, as we‘ve still got glimmers of hope for what the future may hold. Read on for more techy tidbits from your gaming guide!

Still Livin‘ the PS4 Pro Life

Before we set off, let‘s quickly compare PS4 Pro and PS5 specs relevant to RDR2‘s performance:

ConsoleResolutionFramerate
PS4 Pro1920 x 2160p (checkerboard 4K)30fps locked
PS51920 x 2160p (no checkerboard)30fps locked

Yup, RDR2 posture remains entirely unchanged hopping from PS4 fam to PS5 fam hardware. We‘re still limited to a maximum 30fps it seems.

This is the case with most PS4 backward compatible games – that BC acts as more plug-n-play portability than some magical performance booster. The PS5 just runs the PS4 Pro version without applying any special optimizations. Makes sense why they didn‘t rebuild the whole dang engine I suppose!

So while things like God of War or Ghost of Tsushima enjoy bespoke PS5 enhancements…no official next-gen love yet for my poor boah Arthur Morgan 😢

Gotta tip my hat to the fast load times thanks to that PS5 solid state drive though!

Well Howdy Xbox Series X

Meanwhile, on the Xbox ranch…

Microsoft‘s latest Xbox fares a bit better in terms of graphical cowboy fidelity:

ConsoleResolutionFramerate
Xbox One X1920 x 2160p (native 4K)30fps locked
Xbox Series X3840 x 2160p (native 4K)30fps locked

You best believe the Xbox Series X flexes its next-gen muscles to play RDR2 in gorgeous native 4K resolution while maintaining the signature 30fps cap.

So Xbox outlaws reign supreme in terms of visuals for now. But neither platform saddles up to the coveted 60fps threshold quite yet. What gives, partners?

The Ideal Wild Western Framerate

Ya see, for these story-based, cinematic action adventures, 30fps is still considered an "acceptable" frame rate by most developers. Yes even in our (current year) of advancing technologies!

Minimum specs tend to hover in 30fps territory for games of this grandeur and graphical intensity. 60 glorious frames is preferred no doubt, but 30fps checks the box for smooth "playability."

And for the average varmint just looking to immerse themselves in Arthur‘s story and soaked in those sweet sweet Red Dead visuals, 30fps does in fact get the job done. Can‘t argue with 800 hours played myself!

That said, having been spoiled by buttery releases like Spider-Man on PS5, it‘s tough not to crave 60fps+ RDR2 after knowing its potential! Maybe next console generation, amigo 🤠

Hope For a Next-Gen Patch?

Do we bandits-in-waiting stand a chance of getting an RDR2 upgrade patch though? Like what GTA V got to unlock them higher frame cages?

Investigates clues…

Well we know Rockstar has already gone back to supposedly "finished" games before for visual and performance upgrades. Exhibit A: GTA V Expanded & Enhanced Edition for PS5 and Xbox Series X.

We also know PS4Pro and Xbox One X got enhanced RDR2 patches to support 4K and other bits. So Rockstar isn‘t one to forget about its legendary babies.

And with RDR2 multiplayer (Red Dead Online) still going strong with updates and content, there are plenty of cowpokes hungry for advancements.

If rumors hold true, we may even see a RDR2 next-gen bundle with all the Red Dead Online fixes ins tied up! That‘d be the opportune moment for frame rate enhancements 🤞

Alas, Rockstar remains masked in silence, leaving us naught but patience…and dreams of one day riding into Blackwater at a buttery 60fps.

Like a well-worn pair of cowboy boots, Red Dead Redemption 2 on PlayStation 5 still fits quite comfortably at 30fps. Backwards compatibility works wonderfully to bring all our journey‘s progress to next-gen hardware.

I‘ll admit – saddling up to merely match PS4 Pro visuals leaves me yearning for more on this powerful new frontier.

But friends, let‘s find joy in the 30fps moments, like Sun rising over Dewberry Creek, and keep eternal watch for updates on the horizon! Yeehaw! 🤠

What do you think? Are you content just moseying along at 30fps for now? Or desperate for Rockstar to push our pony to 60? Let me know down below, and be sure to smash that Like button!

Stay tuned leading Westwards, outlaws…this saga may just have more chapters yet to write.
