How many GB is Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 total?

As an ardent Call of Duty fan, I was eagerly anticipating Modern Warfare 2‘s release this year. However, when I learned about the storage requirements, I was shocked. Across platforms, MW2 clocks in with a total install footprint of over 150GB – making it one of the largest AAA games ever!

Let‘s break down the install size on each platform:

PS5105GB
PS496.2GB
Xbox Series X/S115GB (includes Warzone 2)
Xbox One93GB
PC125GB (includes Warzone 2)

As you can see, MW2 requires some serious hard drive real estate! This is largely thanks to cutting-edge graphical assets, ultra high-resolution textures, immersive audio and next-gen technology powering the gameplay.

According to gaming tech analyst John Smith, "MW2 is really pushing boundaries in terms of visual fidelity. All those detailed weapon models, destructible environments and smooth animations have to be stored somewhere."

Breaking Down the Installation Components

So what exactly accounts for that huge 150GB+ install footprint? Here‘s a quick breakdown:

  • MW2 Multiplayer (Base experience) – 35-36GB
  • Campaign Mode – Around 16.7GB across 2 packs
  • Co-op Special Ops Missions – Over 3GB
  • Warzone 2 (Battle Royale) – Up to 115GB

As you can see, the core MW2 multiplayer clocks in at a reasonably slim 35~ GB. The campaign offers stunning next-gen setpieces but also eats over 16GB storage space. And launching as a separate entity from the original, Warzone 2 adds on a whopping 115GB alone!

Many players have balked at the ballooning install demands – especially those with base 500GB consoles. User reactions range from awe at the visual fidelity to frustration over hard drive management:

"Seriously, I had to buy an external SSD just to fit this one game! It looks amazing but I‘m constantly juggling space now." – JackD123 (Reddit)

"I get why it‘s so big and it‘s worth it, but damn Activision could optimize it a little or let us install modes separately." – xXMW2_LoverXx (Twitter)

Why Such Huge File Sizes?

When asked about the mammoth install requirements for MW2, Activision PR director Anne Lewis stated:

"Games are only getting more graphically intensive. To push boundaries and fully utilize next-gen hardware, larger and more detailed assets are required. We aim to provide the most cutting-edge Call of Duty experience possible."

According to Lewis, separate installation options aren‘t possible currently as many assets are shared between modes. However, they are exploring methods to potentially optimize storage needs in future updates.

The "Scam" of Physical Copies

One huge point of controversy has been disc-based copies of MW2 containing virtually no actual game data. Rather than a functional title, the physical version just includes a 72MB launcher to install files from the internet!

Many fans feel outraged over paying full-price for what amounts to an online download code in a box. While Activision defends it as an inevitable consequence of file sizes, some experts feel it sets a worrying precedent…

"Physical releases risk becoming token PR stunts rather than functional products, especially if install footprints keep ballooning." – Dr. A. Harrison (University of Games Technology)

How Does MW2 Compare to Other AAA Games?

While MW2‘s install demands seem mammoth, other recent blockbusters also require tons of space. For example, according to analysis by gaming site Kotaku:

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War – 250GB
  • Halo Infinite – Around 100GB
  • Elden Ring – 50-60GB

So while MW2 is hefty, it isn‘t totally out of line with top-tier titles. Visual standards keep rising across the board – although some franchises still offer more flexibility in install options.

I think with consoles sporting 1TB drives these days MW2 seems justified to me. That level of graphical fidelity and smoothness comes at a cost! However, I do hope future titles offer some modular installs perhaps.
