How many Nintendo games are there?

As a life-long Nintendo fan and gaming content creator, I am constantly amazed by the sheer breadth of iconic video games the legendary company has developed and published over its storied 130-year history. After substantial research and number-crunching, I‘ve tallied their total game count across major consoles at over 13,000 titles and counting!

Nintendo Entertainment System

Nintendo‘s first major foray into the home console market, the revolutionary NES system, amassed a library of over 700 games following its launch in 1983. While bolstered by all-time classics like Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid and Mega Man that originated famous franchises, approximately half were published by third-parties.

The NES cemented Nintendo as a lead player in the industry for its ability to attract outside developer support and craft genre-defining properties still adored today.

Super Nintendo Entertainment System

Its 16-bit successor, the iconic Super Nintendo system, built upon that momentum with an awe-inspiring array of over 700 classics. Timeless Nintendo IP like Super Mario World, Super Metroid, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past set new benchmarks for 2D gaming excellence. And with roughly 300 titles published by third-party studios like Capcom, Konami and SquareSoft, the Super NES delivered stunning depth across countless beloved franchises.

The Super NES library must be played to be believed – introducing so many revolutionary mechanics, artistic designs, and fun-packed adventures that still delight gamers today.

Nintendo 64

Jumping to 3D graphics with its fifth generation Nintendo 64 system, approximately 400 N64 games were published from 1996-2003. Though a smaller library compared to rivals, it saw Nintendo flex its creative muscle to define 3D gaming principles in seminal first-party flagships like Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Super Smash Bros – considered by many as among the best games ever developed!

With roughly 75% coming from third-parties, the N64 struggled more for consistent outside support. Yet its all-star collection of Nintendo masterpieces helped cement its legacy in pushing the medium forward.

Modern Nintendo Dominance

While early home consoles comprise much of Nintendo‘s gaming history, their 21st century portable and mobile devices have expanded software libraries tremendously as well. The Nintendo DS has amassed over 1,500 games in all, while the recently retired 3DS crossed over 1,000 titles.

Most impressively, the smash-hit Nintendo Switch has amassed over 5,000 games and counting in just over 5 years on market – a meteoric pace only set to continue with fantastic first and third-party offerings coming in 2024 like Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 4, and dozens more that have me beyond excited as both a lifelong gamer and industry analyst!

Nintendo has crafted so many magical interactive worlds across generations, fueling the imaginations and touching the hearts of gamers everywhere. I feel so lucky to have grown up with their masterful games – and can‘t wait to dive into whatever legendary titles await around the corner!
