How many times can you do New Game Plus in The Witcher 3?

As a hardcore Witcher 3 fan with over 400 hours played, this is a question I see popped up a lot in forums and discussions. The answer is you can technically do an unlimited number of NG+ playthroughs – with a catch. Let me break it down for you:

Chaining NG+ Games

You can start as many NG+ games as you want from a base game save after completing the main story. However, you cannot start a new NG+ run from an existing NG+ save.

So in essence, you need to alternate between base game and NG+ saves when doing multiple playthroughs. Why can‘t you chain one NG+ run into another? Likely due to programming/mechanic limitations the devs imposed.

What Carries Over into NG+?

When you decide to embark on another NG+ run, here‘s what carries over from your last completed save file:

  • Geralt‘s level and all unlocked skills/abilities
  • All armor, weapons, crafting materials, food items, etc.
  • Your entire inventory and full stash
  • Money and crafting components
  • Alchemy recipes, potions, oils etc.

So all your hard-earned goodies come with you into the next playthrough!

What Doesn‘t Carry Over into NG+?

However, these few things do not carry over:

  • Gwent card collection
  • Upgrades and renovations for Corvo Bianco estate

This means you need to re-collect those Gwent cards all over again sigh. And Corvo Bianco resets to its original decrepit state.

Max Level Caps Across Playthroughs

Here‘s a quick data reference on the level caps as you progress through multiple games:

Game StageMax Level Cap
Base Game70
NG+ from Base Game Save100
NG+ from NG+ Save100

As you can see, the Blood and Wine DLC pushes the max level all the way up to 100 once you start NG+. This gives you tons of headroom to keep leveling up Geralt over multiple cycles.

Tips for Starting a NG+ Playthrough

If you‘re ready to step into an NG+ run, here are my top 5 tips before you begin:

  1. Complete all side quests and Witcher contracts before starting NG+
  2. Max out your skill trees and mutagens
  3. Craft and upgrade your grandmaster gear set
  4. Stock up on money, crafting materials, ingredients
  5. Disable level scaling for a greater challenge

Follow those suggestions, and your NG+ experience will be super smooth sailing!

So in summary – you can technically do an unlimited number of NG+ runs as long as you alternate between base game and NG+ saves. Now get out there and max level your Geralt! Let me know if you have any other questions.
