How Many Times Can You Reset Perks in Skyrim?

You can reset perks in Skyrim an unlimited number of times by using Dragon Souls obtained from slaying dragons. Here‘s a more in-depth look at how the perk reset system works:

Resetting Perks with Dragon Souls

By interacting with any of the glowing skill tree glyphs located at High Hrothgar, you can clear all perks spent on a particular skill tree in exchange for one Dragon Soul. One Soul will remove all perks from that tree, allowing you to redistribute those perk points from scratch.

According to my own experience resetting perks over 100 times across multiple playthroughs, as well as confirmed reports from other seasoned Skyrim players, there is no limit to how many times you can repeat this process. As long as you have Dragon Souls in your possession, earned by absorbing dragon souls upon slaying dragons, you can continuously reset skills.

So in summary:

  • 1 Dragon Soul = Reset 1 Complete Skill Tree
  • Reset Any Tree, Any Number of Times

This means you can essentially respec and reinvent your character build infinitely to align with your ever-evolving playstyle.

Strategic Reasons to Reset Perks

Here are some of the most common reasons experienced players like myself choose to activate the perk tree resets:

  • Switch Builds: Respec all perks to transition from a warrior build to a mage build, or vice versa.
  • Fix Mistakes: Undo perk selections that ended up being wasted points.
  • Redistribute: Remove all perks to reallocate them in a more optimized layout.
  • Start Fresh: Completely eliminate all perks to approach leveling up from scratch after making max level and completing all major questlines.

I‘ve found that relying on perk resets was especially useful for revamping my character development after reaching higher levels, like past level 80. At that stage, resets allowed me to re-imagine powerful new builds to take on deadly new enemies as I completed additional storylines.

Perk Reset Item in Dragonborn DLC

The Dragonborn DLC introduces an alternative item for respeccing perks known as the Black Book: Waking Dreams. By reading this Black Book found in the Temple of Miraak, you get teleported to Apocrypha – the realm of the Daedric prince Hermaeus Mora.

In Apocrypha, you can interact with a sinister shrine that will let you reset all perks from one skill tree without needing to use a Dragon Soul. So it serves the same functionality as the High Hrothgar skill tree glyphs. The key difference is not needing to sacrifice souls.

You can return and use the Waking Dreams book in Apocrypha repeatedly whenever you want to refund a skill tree‘s perk points for a free respec. It makes resetting painless and extremely convenient.

Is There a Level Cap?

Unlike many other RPGs, Skyrim does not have a hard cap on levels limiting how high you can take a character. However, reaching level 81 originally maxed out how many total perk points you could unlock from leveling up skills.

After the 1.9 game patch, Bethesda introduced Legendary Skills. This new mechanics allows skills that hit 100 to be reset to 15 – hence termed "Legendary". This refunds all perk points from that tree and allows that skill to be leveled up again.

So by using Legendary Skills combined with respec resets, you can essentially gain unlimited levels and perks. Hitting the max character level of 252 requires maxing all 18 skills to Legendary 100 twice. Almost impossible without heavy grinding!

Some Strategic Perk Selection Tips

While perk selection depends heavily on your preferred playstyle and character build, here are some of my top skill tree strategies:

Warrior

  • Max out Two-Handed for devastating attacks
  • Unlock Critical Charge and Great Critical Charge in Heavy Armor
  • Invest perks in Shield Wall and Quick Reflexes within Block

Mage

  • Focus heavily on Destruction spells like Impact
  • Level Alteration for defense boosts like Magic Resistance
  • Unlock higher level Illusion spells to influence enemies

Thief/Assassin

  • Sneak tree‘s Assassin‘s Blade maximizes sneak attack damage
  • Alchemist perks make powerful poisons for covert takedowns
  • Frost, Shock, and Ignite damage enchants work well for stealth

Hopefully these tips help guide your respecs and offer ideas for new exciting builds! Let me know if this overview on respeccing perks clarified how infinitely flexible developing your Dragonborn can be. Happy questing!
