How to Play Xbox Cloud Gaming Without a Controller

As a hardcore gamer who loves trying the latest Xbox titles, I often get asked how to play Xbox games without a controller. With Xbox Cloud Gaming, you have a few great options to game on the go even if a controller isn‘t handy.

Use On-Screen Touch Controls

The easiest way to play is through the touch control compatible games included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Over 50 games now support custom on-screen button mapping for touch devices like phones and tablets. Popular titles like Minecraft Dungeons, Sea of Thieves, Gears 5, and many more work with touch.

When launching these games through the Xbox app, it will automatically enable touch buttons suites for movement, attacking, accessing menus and inventory. I‘ve played several touch-enabled titles and the controls usually work well, though more complex games can be challenging without physical buttons.

According to Microsoft, the touch control libraries are built using industry standards like Gamepad and WASD mapping. Developers can integrate them while making sure gameplay mechanics tailor well to touch input.

The company actively encourages new game creators to implement touch mapping, so the catalog will likely continue expanding over 2023.

Use Mobile and Cloud Gamepads

For a more console-like experience, wireless controllers from Razer, PowerA, and others work seamlessly with Xbox remote play.

These mobile gamepads connect over Bluetooth, often clip onto your device, and provide physical controls. Pairing only takes a few seconds:

  1. Put the controller in discovery mode
  2. Open your phone‘s Bluetooth settings
  3. Select the controller and connect

Once paired, launch the Xbox app and your gamepad will automatically work!

I‘m currently testing the Razer Kishi V2 and it‘s become my go-to for Xbox gaming on my phone. The controller features clickable analog sticks, shoulder triggers, and a D-pad layout similar to the newest Xbox Wireless Controller. It makes playing shooter and action titles much easier compared to touch.

For Windows PC, you can also use Xbox Cloud Gaming with a wired or wireless gaming mouse and keyboard. This works reasonably well for slower paced games like Microsoft Flight Simulator, though competitive multiplayer titles will be challenging without a gamepad.

If you primarily play RPG, strategy, or simulation games though, mouse and keyboard is a great way to play Xbox titles on your computer without needing a controller.

Check Network Strength Before Playing

While Xbox Cloud Gaming technically only requires a 10Mbps internet connection, I always recommend at least 15-20Mbps speeds for the best experience. This is especially true for fast paced FPS games where lag can get you killed!

Before jumping into matches, take a minute to test your network strength using a tool like Fast.com:

  • Connect your gaming device directly to the router via Ethernet if possible
  • Make sure no bandwidth-heavy activities are running like streaming video
  • Run a network speed test to check current rates

If speeds are consistently at 20Mbps or higher, you‘ll get smooth flawless gameplay with Xbox cloud streaming. Lower than that you may experience occasional lag, graphics degradation, or input delay.

So having a solid high-speed network is key to enjoying your games when playing without a local Xbox console. Some other quick tips:

  • Disable VPN connections which can throttle bandwidth
  • If on WiFi, ensure router placement minimizes obstructions
  • Close unnecessary apps running in the background

With strong connectivity – whether playing with touch controls, a mobile gamepad, mouse & keyboard, or eventually an official Xbox streaming stick – you‘ll get a top-notch gaming experience from the convenience of the Xbox Cloud Gaming service!
