Is Assassin‘s Creed Valhalla free with PS Plus?

As a hardcore Assassin‘s Creed gamer since the very first, iconic installment back in 2007, I‘ve been eagerly following every update about the PS Plus availability of the well-received 2020 entry Valhalla. And I can definitively say a standard PS Plus membership does NOT grant you access to this vast Viking epic for free.

However, PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers are in luck…for now at least. Let‘s discuss the details fellow assassin‘s!

AC Valhalla Is Part of the Ubisoft+ Classics Catalog

PlayStation rolled out a partnership with Ubisoft earlier this year that brought a selection of the publisher‘s games into a special Ubisoft+ Classics section as part of the Extra and Premium tiers.

And wouldn‘t you know it, Assassin‘s Creed Valhalla made the cut! I was as excited as a freshly bearded Norseman pillaging the English countryside when I saw the news. This means existing Extra/Premium members can download the full base game and sail through England with Eivor to their heart‘s content.

However, take note that this Ubisoft partnership is scheduled to end on December 20, 2022 unless renewed.

When Will AC Valhalla Leave PS Plus?

According to recent reports, Assassin‘s Creed Valhalla will be removed from the Ubisoft+ Classics catalog on that December 20 expiration date. I expect Sony will look to re-up the deal with Ubisoft, but nothing has been announced yet.

So if exploring the grand open world of Valhalla via your Premium subscription is high on your agenda, I‘d suggest completing as many territories as your warrior can pillage before the year ends!

Other Assassin‘s Creed Games Missing From PS Plus

It‘s a real shame the earlier Assassin‘s Creed games haven‘t landed on any PS Plus tier yet. As much I loved Odyssey and now Valhalla continuing the RPG trajectory, I‘ll always have a soft spot for the original Altaïr chapter that started it all in 2007.

Here‘s a quick table summarizing what other AC titles are available on the various PlayStation Plus memberships right now:

GameStandardExtraPremium
Assassin‘s Creed OriginsNoNoNo
Assassin‘s Creed OdysseyNoNoNo
Assassin‘s Creed SyndicateNoNoNo

As you can see, Valhalla stands alone when it comes PlayStation Plus availability. Such a missed opportunity in my opinion. Offering this single iconic installment from the entire AC franchise just teases what we‘re missing out on!

Sony has included older Assassin‘s Creed games as part of the monthly PS4 game freebies in the past. But since the PS Plus overhaul, none yet have made their way into the hundreds-deep on-demand catalogs.

Has Ubisoft Made AC Valhalla Free Outside of PS Plus?

For sure! Just this past holiday season Ubisoft granted free access to Assassin‘s Creed Valhalla on all platforms, including PS4 & PS5. It coincided with the release of the game‘s second and likely final expansion Dawn of Ragnarök.

Unfortunately the limited-time promotion ended on January 5. We can only hope Ubisoft repeats this generous free trial period again sometime soon.

I‘ll be watching closely for any word and keeping my Twitter followers updated on @trueassassinscreedfan2022!

The PS Plus Extra/Premium Difference

I go back and forth on whether the Extra or Premium tiers are worth upgrading to from the base PS Plus Essential. But access to a game as mammoth and acclaimed as Assassin‘s Creed Valhalla makes the decision much easier in my book.

Just look at the sheer amount of content available in base Valhalla from my completionist playthrough:

  • Main story arcs: 30+ hours
  • World events & side quests: 50+ hours
  • Collectibles hunting: 15+ hours
  • Completionist total run time: 100+ hours

Having access to that kind of immense RPG adventure on top of the other Ubisoft Catalog classics like Watch Dogs Legion and Immortals Fenyx Rising adds some serious value.

At least in the short term before Ubisoft yanks them away by year‘s end! 😠

What Other AC Games Will Come to PS Plus?

Even with Valhalla‘s time on Premium seemingly short-lived, I remain optimistic about the prospect of expanding the Assassin‘s Creed presence throughout the various PlayStation Plus libraries.

I think PS Plus Extra would be the perfect home for rich single-player adventures like Assassin‘s Creed Odyssey and Syndicate. Offering the entire Ezio trilogy from the early games would also be an insane PS Plus giveaway!

And if Sony somehow landed a full AC franchise bundle headlined by Valhalla across Premium and Extra, I would gladly pay the annual renewal fees without question for that kind of assassin‘s bounty.

A man can dream right? For now, I‘ll settle for living out my Viking conquests in England before Valhalla disappears behind the PS Plus paywall. Skål friends!
