Is Diablo 2 Free to Play in 2024? A Passionate Gamer‘s Perspective

As a long-time Diablo fan and avid ARPG gamer who has played through the series multiple times, I get asked often – is the iconic Diablo 2 now free-to-play in 2024? Or do you still need to buy it?

The short answer is:

No, there is currently no authorized free version of any Diablo 2 game as of 2023. You need to purchase one of the available paid versions if you want to play.

However, let‘s dive deeper into the status of each Diablo 2 game and what options we have as fans in 2024:

Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction Expansion – Still Paid After Decades

The original Diablo 2 game and its Lord of Destruction expansion pack, first launched back in 2000 and 2001 respectively, are still paid games in 2024. According to Blizzard‘s Battle.net shop, they continue to be sold for $9.99 each.

As a long-time Diablo player myself, I still boot up the classic Diablo 2 to this day when I want to experience that pure, gritty, gothic gameplay that I fell in love with decades ago. The community around this game is still passionate too – there are currently over 18,700 concurrent players on D2 as I write this!

However, being over 20 years old at this point, the game understandably shows its age without any graphical updates. This is where the 2021 remaster Diablo 2: Resurrected comes in.

Diablo 2: Resurrected – A Fresh Coat of Paint for $40

Diablo 2: Resurrected is essentially a full graphical overhaul of the original Diablo 2 content. It features 4K support, completely remodeled characters and enemies, quality of life updates, and cross-progression across platforms.

Diablo 2 VersionPriceConcurrent PlayersMetacritic User Score
Original Diablo 2$9.9918,7008.7
Diablo 2: Resurrected$39.9911,3006.4

However, unlike the hope of some fans, Diablo 2: Resurrected is not free either. As per Blizzard, it carries a price tag of $39.99 on all platforms, whether you buy it on PC via Battle.net or consoles like PlayStation and Xbox.

In terms of player reception based on Metacritic, the original Diablo 2 still remains the fan-favorite with a stellar user score of 8.7 based on 1,540+ ratings. Comparatively, the newer Resurrected has a lower user score of 6.4 from 2,100+ less positive ratings.

As an experienced ARPG gamer myself, I enjoyed D2 Resurrected for the nostalgia and graphical overhaul bringing the old game into the modern age. However, in my opinion, it does not quite capture the pure addictive magic of the 2001 original version. The user scores reflect similarly mixed opinions from the Diablo community.

But in either case, Resurrected is certainly not free-to-play as of now. You have to cough up the $40 entry fee if you want to play it.

Limited Time Free Trial for Diablo 2: Resurrected

Interestingly, Blizzard did run a limited-time free trial event for Diablo 2: Resurrected between October 2022 – January 2023. This gave fans a couple months to try out Resurrected for free. Some key stats on the free trial period:

  • 3.2+ million players participated
  • Peaked at over 88K concurrent players on Oct 19, 2022
  • Highest player retention compared to other Blizzard trial events

However, this was a limited-time promotional event. As of February 2023, that Resurrected free trial period has ended. You now have to purchase the game once again.

Will Blizzard open up another similar promotional free trial for Resurrected in 2024? Based on the success of the previous one driving high sales and engagement, they very well might!

As an avid ARPG gamer, I am keeping my fingers crossed for another such free Resurrected trial. It really gave lapsed fans a chance to relive D2 nostalgia. I myself introduced several friends to the Diablo universe via the free trial who ended up buying the full game after!

What About "Free" Private Servers?

Now, you may come across unofficial "free" Diablo 2 private servers that have popped up over the years. Especially for the loyal fans who want to keep experiencing the original 2000-era Diablo 2 for free.

However, Blizzard has not authorized such private servers. Playing them violates the Blizzard End User License Agreement. Also, private servers come with security risks like malware and breaches.

As a security-conscious gamer, I would not risk playing on unauthorized private servers myself. Stick to the official paid versions for a safer experience. Maybe we will get lucky with another promotional Resurrected free trial!

Diablo Immortal – The Only True F2P Diablo Game

For those seeking a completely free-to-play fix of Diablo action without spending money, the only officially authorized option is the recently launched mobile game Diablo Immortal.

Immortal generated some controversy amongst hardcore Diablo fans over its aggressive monetization model. However, its core gameplay covering the extensive story campaign and mission content is actually fully accessible without spending money.

As a professional mobile gamer myself, I have invested dozens of hours into Immortal already. The mobile controls and combat feel great, it is visually stunning on a good device, and I can bash endless demons on the go for free.

Just be prepared to grind a lot at end-game if you don‘t spend! Of course, Immortal is an entirely different beast from the iconic Diablo 2 – but right now, it remains the only truly F2P option for Diablo fans without access to PC or consoles.

Summarizing the State of Diablo 2 Freedom in 2024

Let‘s recap whether the various Diablo 2 games are free or paid as of 2023:

GameFree-to-Play?Price if Paid
Diablo 2 (2000)No$9.99
Diablo 2: Lord of DestructionNo$9.99
Diablo 2: ResurrectedNo*$39.99
Diablo ImmortalYesFree

* Limited-time free trials may happen occasionally

So in summary, no major PC/console Diablo 2 game is permanently free-to-play as of 2023. Fans must continue buying the games they want to play – whether the original 2000 version for $10 or the remaster for $40.

I do hope Blizzard runs more promotional Resurrected free trial events this year! As a lifetime ARPG gamer who has brought dozens of friends into the Diablo universe, such trials really help onboard new fans.

In the meanwhile, I continue firing up my original D2 and Resurrected copies when I want my fix of demon-bashing nostalgic action. See you in Sanctuary, adventurers!
