No, Fuecoco is not an apple

As an avid Pokemon gamer and content creator, I‘m here to definitively answer one of the biggest questions around Scarlet and Violet‘s fiery starter – is Fuecoco actually based on an apple? After digging into official sources, expert analysis, and fan speculation, I can conclusively say no, Fuecoco is not an apple!

Fuecoco‘s Origins Point to Peppers

When Fuecoco was first revealed back in June, its apple-esque shape and colorful design led many fans to assume it was inspired by the bright red fruit. However, deeper analysis of its visual motifs and connections to previous fire starters suggest peppers are a much closer match.

  • Name contains "fuego" – Spanish for fire, fitting for spicy peppers
  • Red and green colors resembles peppers more than apples
  • Progression from round shape to elongated pepper-like forms
  • Fiery temperament and flames match heat and spice of chilis

As Twitter user Max Monroy pointed out, "Fuecoco is a chili pepper not an apple." This lines up far better when you compare Fuecoco to past fire starters like Torchic or Chimchar, who drew visual and thematic elements from animals know for their spiciness or heat, like chicks and chimps.

The Case of the Spanish Peppers

Reddit users have compiled even more compelling evidence that Fuecoco takes inspiration from specific pepper varieties. Spanish stuffed pepper, also called pimiento de piquillo peppers or "little beaks" for their pointed tips are an excellent match for Fuecoco‘s design.

Pimiento de Piquillo Peppers

These sweet, smoky peppers native to northern Spain perfectly align with Fuecoco‘s squat shape, peppery coloring, and the Iberian setting of Pokemon SV. This well researched fan theory brings together real-world biology and in-game lore perfectly!

How Fuecoco Compares to Apple Pokemon

While Fuecoco isn‘t an apple itself, there are two main Pokemon directly inspired by the bright red fruit.

Flapple and Appletun

These dual Grass/Dragon type Pokemon from Gen VIII‘s Galar region are actually two different forms of the same pre-evolution, Applin. By exposing Applin to special items, the Tart Apple or Sweet Apple, you get Flapple and Appletun respectively:

PokemonDescriptionImage
FlappleResembles an apple with leafy wings that allow it to fly
AppletunHas a rotund, apple pie-like body with an orange "apple core" shape on its chest

As you can see, both Applin evolutions clearly pull from apples for inspiration in terms of coloring, shape, and even dragon-fruit seeds as a motif.

The Applin Evolutionary Line

Applin itself is a Wyrm-type Pokemon (an old word for dragon or serpent) that can actually nibble and burrow right into apples! Once comfortably inside an apple, Applin evolves depending on which special apple item it is exposed to.

Applin‘s interesting evolution method

This unique evolution method reflects Applin‘s strong apple basis – a level of direct inspiration clearly different than the pepper motifs seen in Fuecoco‘s design.

Competitively Speaking: Fuecoco‘s Fiery Fighting Style

But just because it isn‘t an apple doesn‘t make Fuecoco any less powerful! Looking past the fruit debate, this blazing hot starter has some fantastic stats and moves that make it a fearsome Fire and Ghost type battler.

Offensive and Defensive Powerhouse

As competitive analysis site Inverse.com explained, Fuecoco and its evolutions have an amazing stat spread perfect for slugging it out offensively:

  • High HP and Defense makes it very bulky and tough to take down
  • Massive Special Attack allows it to hit brutally hard
  • Suiting its fiery personality, focused on dealing damage rather than speed

Combined with Fuecoco‘s secondary Ghost type granting excellent coverage options, you‘ve got an explosive damage-dealer that‘s no pushover on the defensive side either.

Blazing Hot Move Set

Backing up those stellar stats, Fuecoco gets access to the some of the most heavy-hitting Fire and Ghost moves in the game via level up, TM, or TR:

MoveTypeCategory
FlamethrowerFireSpecial
InfernoFireSpecial
HexGhostSpecial
Shadow BallGhostSpecial

Packing burns and sinister ghostly attacks, all of which receive STAB damage thanks to Same Type Attack Bonus, makes this a nightmare combo. Any Grass, Bug, Ice, Steel, Psychic or Ghost types challenging Fuecoco are in for a blisteringly brutal fight!

So while it may not be an apple, Fuecoco still manages to be pretty dang sweet 😉. This fiery fierce pepper Pokemon can easily become the MVP of your Scarlet & Violet team (or Nuzlocke destroyer!) if you choose it as your partner.
