Is Ghost of Tsushima 60fps on PS5?

As a passionate gamer who adores cinematic, narrative-driven open world adventures, Ghost of Tsushima instantly shot to one of my all-time favorites when it launched on PS4 in 2020. I was blown away by the incredibly lifelike rendition of feudal Japan, the engaging story and characters, and the outstanding swordfighting mechanics.

So when PS5 rolled around, I was thrilled to experience Sucker Punch‘s samurai epic running buttery smooth at 60 frames per second. If you own a PS5 and have yet to play Ghost of Tsushima, it‘s absolutely worth diving in just to see it in its full glory at double the frame rate.

Ghost of Tsushima PS5: 60 FPS Analysis

Last November, Sucker Punch rolled out a next-gen update for Ghost of Tsushima unlocked the frame rate. On both PS4 and PS4 Pro, Ghost of Tsushima was capped at 30 FPS. According to Digital Foundry‘s painstaking analysis, the PS5 version maintains an almost flawless 60 FPS whether you choose Resolution or Performance mode.

Here‘s a quick overview of Ghost of Tsushima‘s graphical modes on PS5:

Resolution Mode

  • Target: 3840×2160 resolution @ 60 FPS
  • Maintains 60 FPS with near-perfect stability
  • Only minor, infrequent dips below 60 FPS in busy scenes

Performance Mode

  • Target: ~1800p resolution @ 60 FPS
  • Sticks incredibly close to 60 FPS at all times
  • Arguably not much visual downgrade from Resolution mode

So in summary, Ghost of Tsushima offers an unwavering 60 frame rate on PS5 regardless of your selected mode. For performance junkies like myself, this makes combat encounters feel monumentally more responsive and satisfying.

Below is a snapshot of Ghost of Tsushima‘s performance profile across PlayStation platforms from Digital Foundry‘s testing:

VersionResolutionFrame Rate
PS4 Base1600×180030 FPS (locked)
PS4 Pro2520×144030 FPS (locked)
PS5 (Resolution Mode)3840×216059-60 FPS
PS5 (Performance Mode)~1800p59-60 FPS

Having played across both modes fairly extensively on my PS5, I can confirm Digital Foundry‘s measurements align with my personal experience. Ghost of Tsushima feels incredibly fluid at 60 FPS regardless of some slight resolution differences.

Faster Load Times and Visual Upgrades

On top of the major frame rate boost, Ghost of Tsushima also takes advantage of the PS5‘s ultra fast SSD. While never egregiously long, load times have improved noticeably over the PS4 versions. Fast traveling across Tsushima or retrying a tough duel spends far less time staring at loading screens.

Visually, Ghost of Tsushima has received some nice enhancements as well. Draw distances for objects and foliage have been pushed out further. Shadow quality sees a nice bump over the PS4 Pro, with softer, more realistic penumbras. Sucker Punch has also added enhanced particle effects throughout the world.

Of course, one area that hasn‘t changed is Ghost of Tsushima‘s breathtaking art direction. The mist-covered bamboo forests, wind-swept golden fields, and quaint seaside villages have always provided some of gaming‘s most striking vistas. And they shine brighter than ever at 60 FPS.

DualSense Implemented Beautifully

As a major fan of immersive haptics and adaptive triggers, I was thrilled to experience them implemented into Ghost of Tsushima‘s combat.

Drawing and releasing your katana offers terrific resistance in the trigger pulls. Landing blows in sword fights provides excellent weapon recoil kicked right back into your hands. And galloping at full speed on horseback conveys impactful hoof beats from the DualSense speaker. The controller truly enhances combat, exploration, and archery with thoughtful feedback.

After playing so many hours on DualShock 4, having this degree of haptic immersion breathes exciting new life into Ghost of Tsushima on PS5.

How Does It Compare to Other PS5 Upgrades?

We‘ve seen a handful of fantastic PS4 games get 60 FPS patches for PS5 over the past year. How does Ghost of Tsushima stack up?

Titles like God of War, Days Gone, and Horizon: Zero Dawn have all transitioned wonderfully into buttery smooth 60 FPS Gameplay. Yet they lack any kind of visual overhaul or DualSense support.

Conversely, Marvel‘s Spiderman Remastered received a full next-gen facelift on top of its 60 FPS upgrade. But as a paid remaster, I‘d argue Ghost of Tsushima‘s free upgrade provides far better value.

Considering Sucker Punch has implemented 60 FPS, faster loading, visual enhancements, and exemplary haptics with no additional charge, Ghost of Tsushima is the pinnacle of PS4 to PS5 upgrades in my book.

What Further Improvements Could We See?

As phenomenal as Ghost of Tsushima plays on PS5, I still believe there‘s room for improvement with a full fledged next-gen patch.

Both performance modes employ checkerboard rendering to hit their target resolutions. I would love to see an optional native 4K mode added for those with premium displays.

Ray tracing could provide incredible atmosphere within Ghost of Tsushima‘s gloomy forests or golden sunsets. Sucker Punch has proven so adept at realistically modeling light, I can only imagine how stunning their implementation of ray-traced global illumination or shadows would appear.

Besides graphical improvements, I‘d also enjoy more robust usage of the DualSense controller or 3D spatial audio to heighten immersion. And if we ever get single-player DLC expansions, having them designed exclusively for PS5 would be spectacular.

The Verdict: An Absolute Triumph

As both a hardcore gamer and entertainment enthusiast, I place enormous value on high, stable frame rates and visual splendor. I want my epic interactive cinema to unfold as smoothly and gorgeously as possible.

Ghost of Tsushima provided an immensely gratifying experience even at the launch frame rate of 30 FPS. But raising that up to 60 FPS dramatically elevates an already phenomenal title. Combat gains new intensity. Exploration becomes more inviting. And Tsushima Island dazzles as one of gaming‘s most stunning open worlds.

For my money, Ghost of Tsushima represents the pinnacle of PS4 software, as well as showcasing the abundant benefits next-gen hardware can offer legacy games. If you own a PS5, playing Sucker Punch‘s samurai epic boosted to 60 FPS is an absolute must. This is truly the definitive way to experience one of the PS4‘s greatest games.
