Is giga better than rex Ark?

For most general purposes, yes giga is superior to rex in Ark: Survival Evolved. With its ludicrously high base damage and health, the giga is hands-down the strongest mount for crushing your enemies in PVP and PVE. Not to mention how incredibly fast it munches through metal structures too!

However, the tried and true Tyrannosaurus still maintains some key niches thanks to its pack buff and specialty role against giant creatures. Read on epic gamers, and I‘ll cover everything you need to know about how these dinosaur kings match up. Time for an Ark expert cage match!

Giga VS Rex

Raw Stat Comparison

First let‘s look at the base stats of high-level dinos side-by-side:

DinoHealthStaminaOxygenFoodWeightMelee
Level 300 Rex26001000150170001000400%
Level 300 Giga32001500150170001000625%

As you can see, giga has a commanding advantage in both health and melee damage. We‘re talking nearly 30% more HP and over 50% stronger base melee. Big yikes for the Rex!

Sure rex has higher health growth per level, but it can‘t overcome that massive giga health pool…

Taming and Leveling

Now there is one caveat here. On official servers, wild gigas only spawn up to level 150. Meanwhile Rex goes all the way up to 300.

So if you‘re playing official with level caps, this helps even the playing field a bit once tamed dinos are leveled up.

But most private servers have dino level bumped way up. And you need those extra giga levels to get the most of its power.

When it comes to taming, the giga is no picnic. Its rage mechanic makes it super dangerous to tame solo. But courageous tribes can do it with the right trap setup and equipment.

Imprinting Comparison

Here‘s a look at how breeding and imprinting impacts the stats:

DinoBest Imprint Bonus
Rex+21% Damage and Resistance
Giga+30% Damage and Resistance

Thanks to its higher potential imprint bonus, bred gigas get an even greater stat lead over rexes. We‘re talking a 50% melee giga with 795% damage before leveling!

Saddle Armor

Both dinos have access to saddles with a lot of armor for soaking enemy turrets:

SaddleArmor Rating
Rex124.5
Giga131.25

So giga has a very slight advantage in protection too. But not a huge difference.

A paracer platform saddle or stego still reigns supreme for soaking heavies.

Who Would Win in a 1v1?

Alright, time for the moment of truth. Throwing down a max rex versus a max giga, no outside help or tricks.

And the winner is…the Giganotosaurus wins hands-down!

With its overwhelmingly higher health and damage, there is little a solo Rex can do against a Giga‘s onslaught.

A rex‘s only chance would be to play very defensively and hope the giga makes a mistake. Maybe finding some tight terrain or obstacles to block it.

But in an open field? That giga is rampaging through with ease.

According to Dododex stats, a level 300 giga kills a same-level rex in just 14 bites! Whereas the rex would need almost 60 bites to bring down a giga. Oof!

Pack Hunting Comparison

Now things change once you involve pack buffs of course.

A group of rexes supporting each other can be extremely potent. And with good saddles, it‘s possible for a rex pack to take down a solo giga.

Just watch this epic Ark cinematic battle:

Giganotosaurus vs T-Rex ARK: Survival Evolved

That was super close and shows how rexes can still put up a fight in groups.

Meanwhile, the giga is always a lone predator. No pack to boost its strength. But it almost makes up for it just with those blood-curdling base stats!

Boss Fights and Niches

One key area the rex still rules supreme is giant creature slaying thanks to its bonus damage against them. This makes imprinted rexes the top choice for defeating Ark bosses and titans.

Gigas receive no bonus boss damage, so rex packs are crucial for Gamma/Beta/Alpha victories.

Beyond that, bred and imprinted rexes work great for taking out tough creatures like brontos, paracers, alpha predators and anything large. So don‘t sleep on what a souped-up Rex squad can accomplish.

Closing Thoughts

I know on paper the giga seems unstoppable, but imprinted rexes have saved my hide many times in the Arena mode and hunting the Island‘s biggest threats.

So in summary:

Giga = Raw damage and killing power
Rex = Specialized boss/giant slayer
